From our humble beginnings in 1872 when the Kelly, Feeler and Adams families built a one-room dirt floor schoolhouse called the Hope School, education in Carlsbad has been everyone's business.
From an agricultural center and seaside resort, Carlsbad has become a trend-setting, dynamic business center. Its citizens are savvy and well-educated. They appreciate the natural beauty of the beaches and lagoons, and the laid-back lifestyle of the region. And they value Carlsbad's tradition of excellent education for its children.
Good schools add value to a community. Local realtors report that their clients are drawn to Carlsbad for its first-rate schools, and that this attraction leads to higher real estate values. Potential employees want to resettle here, long-time residents want to stay here, and young people raised in Carlsbad want to return, upon completion of their education, career-ready, to settle down and raise a family of their own. These former CUSD students want their children to have the same high-quality education that they enjoyed.
Carlsbad students are taught by educators who are leading scholars and experts in their field. And it is the tradition of the broader Carlsbad community, parents, businesses, and community members, to be supportive of education, proud of its schools, and involved in their activities.
Carlsbad Unified School District is proud to be a part of this city's tradition. As part of our commitment to the Carlsbad community we want to share some benchmarks of our students' successes with our stakeholders:
Graduation Rates
National graduation rate is around 80 percent. Carlsbad Unified's is 94.9 percent, up 2.3 percent over last year.
Closing the Achievement Gap
Social/economically disadvantaged students' graduation rate has improved by 4.4 percent from 2012 to 2013 to an impressive 87 percent.
Drop Out Rate
CUSD's rate is down by .2 percent to 3.2 percent in 2013.
A-G Completion Rates
A key indicator of college readiness, the rate of completion of the A-G courses, required for admission into UC or CSU, is up from 65 percent in 2013 to 69 percent in 2014.
AP Exams
More students are taking these more rigorous courses, yet CUSD has maintained high pass rates, 85 percent of Carlsbad students pass their AP exams, compared to 64 percent of all California students, 61 percent of students internationally.
Honors, AP and Community College Classes
Last year 51.3 percent of CUSD's high school students were enrolled in these rigorous courses, up 6 percent over 2012-13.
Concurrent enrollment of CUSD students at MiraCosta College has surged from 31 students in the fall of 2013 to 132 students this semester.
AVID Participation
Preparing under-represented students for success in college and career, and supported by the local Rotary, 156 students participated in the AVID program in 2013-14, a 16.4 percent increase over 2012-13.
