Put down that mouse! If you do any, or all, of your holiday shopping online, I’m talking to you. Small Business Saturday returns this year on November 25 and it is a perfect time to discover something new.

“Small Business is the Backbone of the American economy. “We’ve heard it a million times, but it is still something every American should take to heart. A strong local economy is only made possible with strong local support. We need to support our backbone. Within the Carlsbad Chamber membership about 80% of our members are classified as small business. Following the Chamber’s Small Business Awards in October, it’s a great reminder to put our money where our mouth is. We always “think local first”, and now with the Holiday Season upon us, it is one of the crucial times when our community really needs our individual support.

Small Business Saturday will be November 25 this year. This is the 7th Small Business Saturday since its first observation on November 27, 2010. The holiday started as a counterpart to Black Friday for the big-box retailers, and Cyber Monday benefiting the booming e-commerce market. It was sponsored by American Express Corporation who owns the registered trademark. The campaign was and continues to be successful with the support of not only local businesses, but local organizations (like the Chamber and members) and even some large corporations like American Express.

When you shop local, you’re not just supporting that small business owner, you are supporting the employees who have jobs because that business is open and able to compete. When you shop local, you keep your dollars local, and contribute to those taxes that support the local economy, community and civic services. Obviously, the holidays are prime time for gift shopping. Whether the occasion be a gift exchange at the office party, client gifts, or for family, friends or relatives, by shopping at local retailers you will

find things you wouldn’t even think to look for, which often times makes them more unique and meaningful. More so than an algorithm written to suggest the next product to click on “you might also like”.

Think of our Carlsbad Village merchants, or local service providers for salons, massages, tour groups, museums etc. If you have visitors during this time of year, take them out to some of the dozens of fabulous local restaurants or attractions. Or visit some of our world-renowned local golf courses. Help your Carlsbad and North County community continue the Small Business Saturday celebration and Hashtag it!
