When you think of a veteran, you probably imagine someone with a strong sense of duty, drive, and diligence. You wouldn’t be wrong. These characteristics are inherent among the men and women in our military.
Not so surprisingly, these traits translate well into the workplace. And recent studies make an even stronger business case for hiring veterans.
Findings show that veteran hires tend to be more productive and have higher retention rates, according to a Syracuse University brief that synthesizes several academic studies.
Here in our region, we’re especially lucky to have an abundance of veteran talent. The San Diego area, in fact, is home to the nation’s largest concentration of veterans. With more than 240,500 local veterans, they account for about 13 percent of the population in San Diego County.
And consider this: every year, more than 15,000 active duty service members transition back into civilian life right here in our own back yard. That’s a steady, highly-desirable crop of job candidates.
It’s worth noting that many of these veterans have highly-technical skill sets, which are especially valuable in a region with growing sectors in cybersecurity and defense.
If you’re not already taking advantage of this local, highly-qualified candidate pool, I implore you to do it, and soon. And in celebration of Veteran’s Day, now feels like the prime time to spotlight some of the many ways you can start tapping in to this veteran talent pipeline:
- Blue Star Families empowers veterans and their families by connecting them with their local communities, including job opportunities
- Hiring Our Heroes connects veterans and their families with employers through events, fellowships and job boards
- Operation Connect is locally founded and provides a business environment for transitioning service members to connect with job opportunities.
