Carlsbad Sister City Ambassadors began the holiday season with a festive celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Carlsbad – Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic Sister City relationship held at the Green Dragon Tavern and Museum in Carlsbad. In attendance were Carlsbad’s Mayor, Matt Hall who read a proclamation from the City of Carlsbad in honor of the occasion, Mayor Pro Tem Keith Blackburn, City Council member Teresa Acosta, San Diego County Board of Education Vice President Rick Shea, as well as a representative from Congressman Mike Levin office, also reading a proclamation, and a representative of Supervisor Jim Desmond.’s office. CSCA board members and members from the greater San Diego county community associated with Sister City activities were also in attendance.
The festivities included CSCA President Tom Hersant giving an historical overview of the Sister City relationship, and a presentation of a bronze statue by CSCA board member, Laurenn Barker, which was gifted to Karlovy Vary. A special commemorative holiday ornament by Czech artist, Daniela Sipkova Mahoney, designed for the occasion. Was given to each guest.
The highlight of the celebration was a special performance of the Czech dancers of San Diego County with both an adult troupe and a junior children’s troupe. International students from CSUSM participated to help with the celebration and activities. An overview of the future activities of CSCA was outlined by President Hersant and an invitation to the community to join future activities was issued.
