Investing in the arts ecosystem

Now more than ever before, we need the arts and the arts need us. We learned during the pandemic that artistic expression can be a salve for survival during our most distressing times. During that time people explored their creativity in the kitchen, learned dance moves on social media, sang together outdoors and had access to classes and artistic performances online that they never would have experienced before. Research shows time and again that the arts offer significant mental health benefits by reducing stress, reinforcing social connections and helping us gain new insights about ourselves and the world we live in. Lack of access to the arts can increase depression and isolation, contributing to what United States Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy characterized as a “loneliness epidemic” that is spreading across society.

Carlsbad’s Arts & Culture Master Plan cites research by Americans for the Arts that reinforces the broader benefits of arts and culture. The arts have a strong, proven track record of unifying communities, improving academic performance, strengthening tourism and the local economy, nurturing an innovative workforce and even improving health care outcomes.

Fortunately, in Carlsbad we have maintained a steadfast commitment to investing in arts and culture. Leading by example, the city offers Community Arts Grants to arts organizations and Carlsbad schools that provide a wide variety of arts experiences to residents. In June, the Arts Commission awarded $117,128 in funding to 26 arts organizations and schools in Carlsbad. From workshops that teach artists essential business skills, to placing teaching artists in schools, to presenting high quality jazz, theater and poetry in the community, the Community Arts Grants provide for a robust arts ecosystem that ensures a solid future for arts and culture in our community.

The city cannot support the arts ecosystem alone. A longstanding tradition of civic pride and responsibility upheld by non-profit support organizations has been foundational to the city’s reputation as a regional arts leader. Founded in 1987, Carlsbad Friends of the Arts is committed to promoting and supporting the city’s cultural arts programs and activities. Members of
Carlsbad Friends of the Arts raise funds at
TGIF Concerts in the Park that in turn make possible many of the free performances, arts experiences and educational programs provided by the city. For more than 25 years the Carlsbad Library & Arts Foundation has pursued its mission to seek, cultivate and provide financial support for library and cultural arts facilities and programs. The Foundation was created to stimulate the enthusiastic involvement of those who wish to preserve a lasting legacy of learning for future generations while anticipating and responding to the ever-changing needs of our growing and diverse community.

Consider getting involved as a volunteer, board member or donor to Friends of the Arts and Carlsbad Library & Arts Foundation. Your support is vital to artists, arts organizations and the next generation of creatives to thrive. By giving your time and talents to support the arts you are giving back to the community and to yourself.
