Carlsbad Village: Greener by the day

Remember the early days of transitioning from plastic grocery bags to reusable ones? Building the habit of grabbing canvas totes or insulated bags from the back seat before entering the store did not happen overnight. For many, it meant turning around mid-stride to retrieve them—again and again. But over time, it became second nature. We adapted.

In much the same way, the Carlsbad Village Association (CVA) has spent the past several years intentionally building its own sustainability practices—learning, refining, and evolving along the way. What began as small, thoughtful changes has grown into a comprehensive commitment that now extends across CVA’s events and daily operations.

CVA took its first major step toward sustainability in 2018, well before such efforts became widespread. The organization transformed its Taste of Carlsbad Village event by introducing reusable cups and utensils, alongside compostable serveware. In its earliest efforts, CVA even coordinated the transport of food waste to a Los Angeles–based composting facility with support from the City’s environmental sustainability contractor—demonstrating a willingness to go the extra mile in pursuit of responsible practices.

Building on that foundation, CVA partnered with the City of Carlsbad’s Sustainable Materials Management Division in late 2023 to begin the transition toward a single-use plastic–free farmers market. Over the course of a year, this initiative proved to be a remarkable success. Today, visitors to the State Street Farmers Market will find only reusable, paper, or compostable bags in use. All hot food vendors and sampling participants now utilize BPI-certified compostable serveware. While this transition has required a meaningful financial investment from farmers and vendors, their collective commitment underscores a shared dedication to sustainability. Complementing these efforts, CVA’s volunteer-led community clean-ups have removed nearly 5,000 pounds of trash from downtown Carlsbad, reinforcing a shared commitment to maintaining a clean and welcoming Village.

CVA’s efforts have culminated in a significant milestone achieved just this month: recognition with Tier 2 certification through the City of Carlsbad Green Business Program and becoming an official member of the California Green Business Network. This recognition reflects CVA’s ongoing commitment to practices that support employee wellness and productivity, conserve energy and water, promote responsible resource management, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

As part of this certification process, CVA implemented several impactful operational changes. The organization upgraded all of its lighting systems to energy-efficient LED alternatives, including motion-sensor technology, and transitioned to environmentally preferable cleaning and paper products. It also replaced single-use coffee pods with a pour-over brewing method—an adjustment that alone eliminates more than 1,200 pods annually.

While some of these changes may appear incremental, their cumulative impact is substantial. Energy-efficient lighting upgrades, supported in part by a $250 rebate through the program, have resulted in measurable cost savings while reducing environmental impact. At the same time, increased awareness—such as learning about the presence of microplastics and toxins in single-use coffee pods—has informed more intentional decision-making across the organization.

Perhaps the most meaningful transformation, however, has been a shift in perspective. What once felt like an inconvenience has become an integral part of how CVA operates. With a deeper understanding of both the “how” and the “why” behind these changes, the organization is better equipped to share its experience and inspire others to take similar steps.

Sustainability is not achieved overnight—it is built through consistent effort, informed choices, and a willingness to evolve. At CVA, that journey continues, one thoughtful decision at a time.
