On June 6, 2006, Brian P. Bilbray was elected to serve in the 109th Congress to represent the 50th Congressional District of California, to finish the term of Randy "Duke" Cunningham. He will keep the same office space locally and in Washington as his predecessor.
Sworn into office on June 13 of this year, Congressman Bilbray will serve on the House Armed Services Committee, the Veterans' Affairs Committee and the Committee on Government Reform.
When asked about his committee assignments, Congressman Bilbray replied, "I'm honored to serve on these three extremely important committees. I can't think of a more important time to serve on committees like Armed Services and Veterans' Affairs, especially during this time of war."
He continues, "My top priorities will continue to be securing our border, supporting our troops and winning the War on Terror. I am also grateful for my appointment to the Government Reform Committee where I can work to ensure that local governments are reimbursed for the costs of illegal immigration and that the integrity of our voting process is preserved and not corrupted through illegal immigrant participation."
Congressman Bilbray has been at the forefront of the battle to protect the Mt. Soledad Veterans War Memorial and has co-sponsored legislation with Congressman Duncan Hunter to make Mt. Soledad a National War Memorial, allowing to stay as it is today for San Diegans to enjoy for generations to come.
A native San Diegan, Congressman Bilbray was born at Coronado Naval Air Station where his father served in the Navy. He brings to his constituency a unique level of experience having served the people of San Diego County as a Mayor, County Supervisor and Congressman. His two decades of business and local government service were instrumental in developing San Diego County’s progressive initiatives regarding environmental protection, pollution control and economic development.
He was first elected in 1994 to the 104th Congress, and brings 6 years of seniority with him to Washington D.C. as the representative from the 50th Congressional District of California.
Bilbray was a key player in the drafting and passage of some of the major accomplishments of the 104th Congress: the Safe Drinking Water Act, the Immigration Reform bill and the Welfare Reform measure. He also led the charge to add almost 1,400 new agents to the U.S. Border Patrol in 1995 and authored legislation responsible for bringing the cruise ship industry back to San Diego which resulted in tremendous economic benefits for the region.
Brian, 55, and his wife Karen live in Carlsbad, CA and are the proud parents of five children and one grandchild.
