Founded in 1910, Army and Navy Academy has served thousands of young men who have gone on to lead successful and purposeful lives representing virtually every profession.
The academy is a college preparatory, military-style boarding school for young men in grades 7 through 12. It was established with 13 students in Pacific Beach and was relocated in 1936 to the Carlsbad Village.
Today, 300 young men from around the world preserve the school's rich traditions while embracing rigorous, yet supportive college prep curriculum. The school's core curriculum is based on the University of California's entrance requirements.
Recognizing that each cadet learns differently, the average teacher-to-student ratio of 1:15 allows for customized strategies and tutoring. Last year, 100 percent of the Class of 2009 was accepted to one or more colleges or universities.
“We are proud that more than 90 percent of our graduates attend four- and two-year colleges and universities upon graduation. That puts real meaning in our college prep curriculum,” said retired Army Brig. Gen. Stephen M. Bliss, president of Army Navy.
Core values instilled in graduates include leadership, excellence, honor, responsibility, loyalty and compassion.
“Army Navy teaches more than just the basics of education and leadership, it has allowed me to experience the fundamental skills of life,” said Class of 2008 Salutatorian Alex Mui.
Unlike most traditional military boarding schools, Army Navy consists of 29 buildings on 16.5 acres adjacent to the ocean, providing students beachfront access for water sports and roller hockey. The academy also offers cadets a variety of extracurricular activities, including drama, art, surfing and photography.
Its sports teams are known as the Warriors. The school fields teams in 11 varsity sports, including football, basketball, baseball, cross-country, wrestling, golf, water polo, soccer, swimming, tennis and track and field.
As Army Navy celebrates its centennial, the school's leaders also are looking ahead to the next 100 years with great anticipation.
The city of Carlsbad recently approved the academy's campus-wide master plan, which involves significant renovation of its existing facilities, as well as a number of new structures, including academic buildings, dormitories and athletic facilities. The school intends to preserve its beautiful Spanish mission architecture while at the same time creating a world-class campus that will enhance the educational experience it provides.
“We are proud to carry the torch of all who have gone before us and vow to continue to uphold our mission: To educate and develop young men of good character,” Bliss said.
