People are making their mark on Carlsbad Village! The Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce presented their fire hydrant painting contest last month with 25 hydrants available for adoption. The painted hydrants will be featured in a walking tour beginning November 1.

Businesses, individuals and students, encouraged to get involved and either paint a hydrant themselves or enlist one of Carlsbad's talented local artists, began adopting hydrants last month for either $300, $400 or $500, depending on location. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund.

On November 1, maps will be distributed throughout Carlsbad Village showing the exact locations of the hydrants and inviting residents and visitors to take the walking tour and vote on their favorites.

"This is fun way for people to get out and enjoy what the downtown Village has to offer: unique stores, restaurants, a blossoming art and fashion scene and more." said Ted Owen, president of the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce. "With the holidays coming up, it's also good to remind everyone that Carlsbad has over 1,000 free parking spaces and no meters anywhere, even at the beach."

The fire hydrant painting contest is sponsored byBarratt American, DeNault's True Value Hardware and SZPR. For more information on this program or to find out how you can get involved, please call Andrea at the Carlsbad Chamber at (760) 931-8400.
