It's not too late to participate in the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce's Art in the Heart of the Village program, there are still has several fire hydrants and a few power boxes available to be adopted.
The theme of this year's program is animals and the community is invited to participate in the fire hydrant painting program. Under the approval of the city of Carlsbad, approximately 28 hydrants and four power boxes throughout the Village are expected to be painted.
The cost to adopt a hydrant has been reduced to $250 and power boxes are now available for $350, which includes paint. The chamber can recommend volunteer artists to paint the focal points.
Those who refer someone to adopt a hydrant or power box will receive $25.
Once all of the hydrants and power boxes are painted, a detailed map will be provided to the general public that notes the location of each, as well as the artist and sponsor. People will have the opportunity to vote for their three favorite designs.
Ballots will be available at select businesses in the Village. The winners will be announced at a special event.
After its initial positive impact two years ago, the chamber re-launched the program with a new theme to continue the beautification of the area and to promote tourism in the Village. The original program included 26 hydrants and no power boxes.
A portion of the funds raised through this program will benefit Military Outreach Ministry Camp Pendleton and the Carlsbad Village Improvement Partnership. The program sponsors are Carlsbad Animal Hospital and DeNault's True Value Hardware.
