With his decades of service, as a teacher, coach and civic leader, it's certain that Carlsbad Mayor Bud Lewis is a “big cheese,” although he never acts that way.
At ArtSplash 2008, Lewis will indeed become a big cheese when his bust will be carved from a huge chunk of milk cheddar. Renowned cheese artist Sarah Nep, who has created cheese busts of former president Bill Clinton and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, will carve the mayor's bust during the chalk festival.
ArtSplash will dive onto Armada Drive, between Cannon and Palomar Airport roads, Sept. 20-21. Both admission and parking are free, as are many interactive arts and entertainment opportunities.
ArtSplash highlights gallery-quality professional art and celebrates the creativity inherent in people of all ages and walks of life. Primary art attractions include professional and novice artists creating masterpieces in chalk, stone, sand and other unique media while visitors watch. People also can try their hand at rock-stacking, sand-sculpting, hat-making and other inspirational innovations.
Working from photos and sketches, Nep will sculpt as visitors watch. One of only six cheese carvers in the nation, Nep said her art is “like ice carving, except there's no puddle at the end.”
Joking that he is just a “local yokel,” Lewis said he is happy to have his likeness sculpted for a good cause.
“Every year, more and more people come to ArtSplash from other areas and put money into our economy,” he said. “It's a very positive event.”
In addition to Carlsbad residents and day-trippers countywide, many tourists arrive from Southern California locales, staying in local hotels and visiting area restaurants.
“Every year, we remain true to our chalk art tradition while adding new features to entice and entertain the 30,000 visitors who annually attend,” said Event Chairwoman Joni Miringoff.
The festivities also will include a Karl Strauss Beer Garden, the Taste at ArtSplash, performances by the Fern St. Circus, a silent auction, fine art vendors and street entertainers. The proceeds will benefit art and music programs in North County schools.
