ArtSplash is a community celebration for arts education. Just eight years old, this two-day chalk art festival, which takes place this year on September 25, has already become Carlsbad's fall classic. Offering a panoramic view of the Pacific from its scenic site on Armada Drive, ArtSplash also has evolved into a popular destination event for thousands of new and returning visitors across Southern California, thus adding to the coffers of the Carlsbad business community, especially the hospitality industry.
Free, fun and family-friendly, ArtSplash unleashes the creativity inherent in all, from toddlers to grandparents. This nonprofit event raises funds in support of arts and music programs in North County schools.
Proceeds support such innovative projects as tile-decorated refuse receptacles at Aviara Oaks and Valley Middle schools. Half of each $20 ticket from Taste at ArtSplash goes directly to schools that pre-sell them.
“ArtSplash grew from the ground up,” recounts co-founder and chair, Joni Miringoff. “Starting with little fanfare but much enthusiasm and great support from the City and business community as chalk art created on the street, we have matured into a fully fledged festival offering continuous entertainment, fine art, great food, a plethora of hands-on arts activities and unique creations such as the 2008 cheese sculpture of Mayor Bud Lewis.”
Miringoff says the retiring mayor has not only been a staunch ArtSplash supporter, but an avid participant. “Typically, after welcoming the crowd to the event, the mayor will get his face painted and enjoy the festivities.” This year, a special presentation to Mayor Lewis will take place Saturday, September 25 at 12:20 pm.
Miringoff explains that ArtSplash continues a free-spirited tradition dating back to 16th century Italy when itinerant street painters used colored chalk to create images on sidewalks and public squares. She concludes, “What began in 2003 as an arts adventure for all ages has become an arts adventure for THE ages. We hope people are drawn to ArtSplash 2010. This year's event promises to be the best yet!”
