Michael D. Pattinson, president and CEO of Barratt American home builders, has been named San Diego Entrepreneur of the Year for real estate and construction industries by Ernst & Young LLP.
This recent honor makes Pattinson eligible for the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year national awards, which will be announced November 18 at an awards banquet in Palm Springs.
A native of Bedford, England, Pattinson was educated at the Luton College of Technology and began working as a sales counselor for Barratt Developments PLC in his twenties. He was first assigned to Barratt’s U.S. subsidiary in 1983 to head marketing in Orange County. He was named president of the San Diego division of Barratt in 1984. After a stint for the firm in continental Europe he returned to San Diego in 1991 as president of Barratt American.
For many years Pattinson has been a home-building leader statewide as well as nationally. In 2003 he was named to the California Building Industry Hall of Fame, being selected unanimously, a rarity, in his first nomination submission.
Since assuming the leadership of Barratt American, Pattinson has led the firm from the doldrums of the early ’90s building recession into years of continuing growth and distinction, record sales, and a reputation for a high level of excellence in home and community building.
In 2004 Pattinson led a Barratt American management team that negotiated a buyout of the international firm’s U.S. subsidiary, which was reborn as an independent, regionally focused, employee-owned company. With a highly successful move into urban infill development, the new Barratt American is now expanding beyond its long-established suburban subdivision base and setting ambitious goals for further company growth and diversification across the full market spectrum.
