Tip Top Meats European Deli has earned the 2014 Certificate of Excellence from the website Tripadvisor for "consistently impressing travelers."
That's one of two recent accolades for owner John Haedrich, whose restaurant also received a Gold Medallion for the "Best Ethnic Restaurant" by the San Diego Restaurant Association.
This summer, Haedrich, or "Big John" as he's affectionately known, continued his 12-year tradition of helping the children who participate in local 4H clubs by attending the junior livestock auctions in Lakeside and at the San Diego County Fair.
"I always bid and get the best animals," said Haedrich, who spent $35,000 in Lakeside and $58,000 at the county fair. "It fills my heart to do this, to help the kids."
He butchers the animals and then donates the meat. He also offers to butcher and process the animals that others buy, and he prides himself both on the quality of the workmanship and on the competitive price. The two recent awards can be added to the numerous awards Haedrich has earned during his decades in business, and he has no intention of taking it easy, adding that he wants to continue to improve.
"It's hard to stay up there," Haedrich said. "You can never just rest on your laurels."
