The choice is not always easy when deciding on which gym to join. Do you want the Pilates gym, the yoga gym or the kickboxing gym? Well, if you are like most people, one sport is not enough, and you want all activities made available in one convenient gym.
Until recently, this was only a dream. But with the opening of The Boxing Club in Carlsbad, area residents will now be able to combine Pilates, kickboxing and Jiu-Jitsu, among other fitness activities.
"The Boxing Club is a full-service sport and fitness company, we have all the amenities that you would expect from a high-end health club facility," said Steven Wade, CEO of the club.
The Carlsbad location will join four other locations in San Diego County including La Jolla, Pacific Beach, La Mesa and Kearny Mesa.
The gyms are a dream realized for Wade, who purchased the original club in Pacific Beach in 2002.
"I bought a small 'mom and pop' chain … with the focus on keeping the good, discarding the bad," Wade said.
A graduate of the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, Wade was no stranger to management.
"For my first six years of working I worked on Wall Street as an equity options trader, then I decided there's a lot of ways to make money in life, why not spend it doing something you love, something you're passionate about," Wade said.
It took no time to boil down his passion; Wade played basketball in college and holds a black belt in karate, so developing a mixed-use athletic club was ideal for his interests.
In line with Wade's model gym, The Boxing Club features everything from kickboxing to street-smart self defense to yoga.
And while working up a sweat, patrons can enjoy plasma screen television as well as audio and video systems throughout the club.
"Its' an alternative to what is out there now," Wade said, referring to other gym memberships.
In his role as CEO, Wade oversees the organization and development of all clubs.
"I have the thrill and the rush of building a successful organization, at the same time I am proud that the reason I got into this (was) to make a significant impact in people's lives every day by helping them get in shape," Wade said.
Wade understands that results make products believable, and he is positive that The Boxing Club's results will be evident in patron's bodies.
"A typical one hour group exercise class at our club will burn 700 to 800 calories," Wade said.
Combine that with a little yoga and strength training and a sculpted body is just months away.
The club targets the young professional audience, focusing on members in their late 20s and early 30s.
"We like to think of our club as a young thinking club," Wade said.
