LEGOLAND prepares for water park's opening
LEGOLAND California Resort is putting the finishing touches on its newest addition, the LEGO Legends of Chima Water Park, which is scheduled to open on May 24. The largest model for the water park, a lion temple arch, was installed over Easter weekend. The arch, made out of 260,000 LEGO bricks, stretches 18, feet high and 14 feet wide and weighs 2,116 pounds. It streams water beneath a massive lion head at the entrance of a wave pool.
The giant model is positioned in front of Mt. Cavora, the "floating" iconic mountain from the popular "Legends of Chima" building sets and television show. Mt. Cavora is 23 feet tall, and 13 feet wide, weighs more than 11,000 pounds and will release 400 gallons of water every minute as it "floats" 40 feet above the wave pool.
The water park will also include a "build-a-boat" area that allows young guests to build and race their own boats and build their own LEGO scene in Chima. Six LEGO models will be featured in this area, including four miniature scale models of areas within Chima Water Park and an Eagle Head that stands 11 feet-high.
Lion Temple Wave Pool is one of eight areas featured in the new LEGO Legends of Chima Water Park, including a water slide and water cannon area, a restaurant, a tropical forest and a sand-filled oasis with shade and lounging areas.
LEGO Legends of Chima Water Park is included in the cost of admission to LEGOLAND Water Park.

GIA presents iconic photos and gems
GIA (Gemological Institute of America) is presenting an exhibit that celebrates the award-winning photographs that have been featured in the award-winning scientific journal Gems & Gemology (G&G).
"The Beauty of Science: Gems and Gemology Celebrates 80 Years, Featuring the Artistry of Harold & Erica Van Pelt," starts on May 19 and runs through December at the GIA's headquarters in Carlsbad. It offers visitors a unique opportunity to see stunning pieces of historic and gemological significance side-by-side with their iconic photos.
"The Van Pelts' photos for G&G captured the synergy between the science and beauty of gems, and were truly instrumental in drawing readers into the journal. From 1981 to 2009, their work graced the covers of 93 issues, as well as many inside pages," said Terri Ottaway, curator of the GIA Museum. "The beautiful gems and jewelry in this exhibit give context to the exquisite photos created by Harold & Erica Van Pelt."
The exhibit features 15 cases and more than 20 pieces. Highlights include the Maharaja of Indore necklace, which contains 374 diamonds and 15 fine Colombian emeralds recovered during the Spanish Conquest of the New World and a Colombian emerald and diamond necklace with matching earrings designed by Jean Schlumberger for Tiffany & Co. in the 1950s. The three largest emeralds range from 6.65 to 7.41 carats.
Gems & Gemology, GIA's quarterly research journal, celebrates its 80th anniversary in 2014. Harold and Erica Van Pelt, pioneers of gem photography, played a major role in the evolution of the journal for more than 25 years with stunning photos that complemented the groundbreaking gemological research.
"In our work with G&G, we were able to photograph some of the finest, most valuable, and most unusual gems, minerals, and jewelry in the world. It was both a challenge and a privilege," said Erica Van Pelt. "We are delighted to be part of this exhibit honoring G&G's 80th anniversary."

ViaSat awarded $283m in patent suit
A federal court jury has awarded ViaSat, Inc. $283 million in damages in its patent infringement and breach of contract case against Space Systems/Loral (SS/L) last month. The jury found SS/L infringed three ViaSat patents relating to its ViaSat-1 high-capacity satellite system and breached the non-disclosure agreements and manufacturing contract between the parties. During trial, SS/L dropped its counterclaim alleging ViaSat had infringed an SS/L patent. The trial was held in the United States District Court for the Southern District of California.
ViaSat has requested that the court enter a permanent injunction prohibiting SS/L from manufacturing or selling infringing satellites or satellite components, including the continued manufacturing of infringing satellites currently under construction. Additional issues remain for the court to rule upon that could ultimately impact the amount of the award, and any final ruling and award in the case is subject to appeal.
In February 2012, ViaSat served a complaint for patent infringement and breach of contract against SS/L and Loral Space & Communications related to the unauthorized use of ViaSat's intellectual property, including technology ViaSat developed for its ground breaking 100+ Gbps ViaSat-1 satellite.
"We appreciate the jury's hard work and their attention to the evidence. While litigation was a last resort for us in this case, the process ultimately confirmed that ViaSat invented the groundbreaking ViaSat-1 technology and the extensive damages validate the significant value of this technology in creating high capacity satellites," said Rick Baldridge, ViaSat president and COO in a statement. "We will continue our commitment to protect our intellectual property and innovation."
