Each year, the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce recognizes greatness among its business community, a community that it nurtures and promotes throughout the year. With this year's special event, titled Brilliance in Business, the Chamber has employed more ways to support local businesses and raise their profile in the community, including additional categories and an additional medium for promoting nominees' businesses.
The annual gala event will be held at 6 p.m. March 4 at the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort.
“We feel like this year is particularly momentous for Carlsbad,” said Chamber CEO Ted Owen. “Our business community has made it through some significant challenges in the past year, kept its collective shoulder to the wheel and pulled off a successful, productive year in the face of some compelling obstacles.”
The event's theme, Brilliance in Business, evokes the star quality that Carlsbad's businesses have achieved this year. The awards themselves are named for the stars that light up the sky with their undeniable brightness.
The sponsor names for the awards ceremony (Galaxy, North Star, Shooting Star, etc.) also reflect the stellar significance of community sponsorship of local businesses.
“Our nominees and sponsors are the leaders of our community,” Owen said. “They illuminate what it means to persevere. They work with the Chamber to be the constant sources of light and leadership, never wavering, but burning with an intensity that translates to success, and to a bright example to us all of what it means to achieve.
The Chamber is producing the star-studded evening to honor and support local business and community luminaries whose stellar achievements drive our economy. This premiere event will celebrate the rising stars of business, recognize the achievements of the Chamber's 2010 board of directors and inaugurate the 2011 leadership team.
According to Owen, the list of business nominees includes some familiar names and some names that are new to the Chamber's Annual Business Awards. Many nominees are much-loved and well known local businesses.
“The Small Business of the Year category is particularly exciting this year,” said Chamber COO Toni Padron. “Some of these businesses have had to apply extraordinary creativity and determination to stay competitive in the past year,” she said. “Some of them have participated in Chamber small business programs to gain their edge. Each of them deserves our appreciation because as we all know, small business is the cornerstone of our economy and of job creation.”
As a result of being nominated, this year's crop of nominees enjoyed even greater promotion by the Chamber, as every one of them was featured on the Chamber's Web site, with a link to the business' Web site provided.
Also new this year is the category Non-Profit Association of the Year. “It's a long-overdue category,” said Owen. “Where would Carlsbad as a community be without these amazing leaders? They do excellent, admirable work on behalf of myriad groups of citizens and worthy causes. And they do it with the help of dedicated volunteers, board members and administrators,” he said. “They deserve our thanks and recognition.”
Last year's winners have uniformly carried the torch of success into 2011, according to Owen. “These businesses have taken their success and used it to galvanize their resolve. Our community leaders — past and future — are all among our nominees and winners,” he said.
