Small business center celebrates ten years
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the North County Small Business Development Center, or SBDC.
The center provides North County entrepreneurs and small business owners with counseling and resources that help them build solid foundations for growth and success. Sponsored by the U.S. Small Business Administration and hosted by MiraCosta College, the SBDC has assisted more than 13,000 businesspeople over the past 10 years.
It has also helped local entrepreneurs establish 223 new businesses, resulting in the creation of 1,000 new area jobs. These new businesses alone have created a revenue increase to the region of more than $64.5 million. The center also estimates that its services helped businesses retain an additional 600 jobs, and enabled local companies to secure more than $23 million dollars in loans.

Eco-friendly campus breaks ground
With enrollment two years ahead of the original plan, Pacific Ridge School has accelerated its master campus building plans.
On Oct. 24, the school broke ground on the first phase of the plan, which includes a new synthetic athletic field and an energy-efficient high school building to accommodate up to 360 ninth through 12th grade students. Pacific Ridge is committed to becoming one of the few schools across the country to receive gold accreditation from LEED, a nationally accepted benchmark of environmental responsibility.

Tri-City receives chest pain accreditation
Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside has become the first hospital in San Diego County to receive Cycle III Chest Pain Center Accreditation from the Society of Chest Pain Centers.
The society's accreditation process ensures centers meet or exceed quality-of-care measures in acute cardiac medicine. California has only 18 hospitals with this accreditation and out of those, only two have Cycle III accreditation.
Tri-City also is a San Diego County Designated STEMI (Heart Attack) Receiving Center and is establishing a Cardiovascular Institute that will launch next year. For more information, visit www.tricitymed.org.
GIA clothing drive helps needy families
The Gemological Institute of America, or GIA, recently held a "gently used" clothing drive to help families struggling to make ends meet.
The GIA's Green Team came up with the idea of recycling clothes for the program. More than 150 GIA staff members and students donated six car loads of jackets, blankets and other items, which were given to Community Resource Center for its holiday gift baskets program.
The GIA Green Team was created to promote environmental awareness and encourage employees to reduce, reuse and recycle at work and at home. The GIA is the world's foremost authority on diamonds, colored stones and pearls.

CEF raises $66,000 for school programs
The Carlsbad Educational Foundation, a nonprofit organization devoted to developing and launching educational and enrichment programs for nearly 11,000 Carlsbad students, announced last month that its 9th Annual Golf Classic raised more than $66,000 in contributions.
Valin Brown, CEO of the foundation, said the strong show of community support was rewarding, especially at a time when statewide budget cuts are creating additional challenges for public education.
Since its inception in 1983, the foundation has contributed more than $4 million in funds to Carlsbad schools, primarily for science, technology, arts and reading. For more information, visit www.carlsbaded.org.
Seniors wrap presents for overseas troops
More than 135 residents at La Costa Glen recently wrapped nearly 2,200 Christmas and Hanukkah presents for America's troops fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan as part of the retirement community's Care Packages From Home program.
The presents included everything from flashlights and warm gloves to sketch pads and playing cards. Every box also has two telephone cards to enable the troops to call home free of charge.
Now in its third year at La Costa Glen, Care Packages From Home was started by residents Les and Betty Tenney. Les, a veteran of World War II, survived the Bataan Death March in the Philippines while a Japanese prisoner of war for more than three years.
With this most recent gift-wrapping and shipping effort, the group marked its 5,000th package shipped to troops in the Middle East. Care Packages From Home is a nonprofit organization funded by La Costa Glen residents and friends.

Scripps Health hosts first Wellness Day
The first Scripps Wellness Day, which was Oct. 17, attracted nearly 2,000 visitors to six Scripps campuses to learn more about their health, visit with physicians and take part in wellness screenings.
The Carlsbad event took place at Scripps Coastal Medical Center on Salk Avenue. More than 500 community members attended, and physicians were on-hand representing multiple specialties.
Healing touch treatments and free screenings for cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure and balance also were administered. Scripps Health is a $2 billion nonprofit community health system that annually treats 500,000 patients.

Waste Management receives esteemed sustainability award
Waste Management of San Diego and North County were recently recipients of the California Integrated Waste Management Board's esteemed Waste Reduction Awards Program.
Waste Management was the only company in San Diego County to receive this honor in its industry. The program annually recognizes California businesses that have made outstanding efforts to reduce non-hazardous waste by implementing resourceful practices, aggressive waste reduction, reuse and recycling activities and the procurement of recycled content products.
To receive the award, Waste Management had to demonstrate four required components, including education, waste prevention, purchase of recycled content or environmentally preferable products and reuse, recycling and composting. It was one out of 263 applicants that were awarded this honor.

TTTech partners with NASA
