ViaSat receives $52 million Navy contract
ViaSat Inc., based in Carlsbad, has received a $52 million contract from the Navy's Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command in San Diego.
The purchase is of state-of-the-art satellite communications equipment. The equipment is a Multifunctional Information Distribution System. The terminals display battlefield information to soldiers in different locations so they can create plans to coordinate attacks.

Invitrogen to buy competitor for $6.7 billion
Carlsbad-based Invitrogen has negotiated the purchase of its biggest competitor, Applied Biosystems Group, for $6.7 billion.
The transaction is targeted to close in the fall. The new entity will take the name Applied Biosystems Inc. and be based in Carlsbad. It will consist of nearly 10,000 employees.
The combination will create a nearly $4 billion firm specializing in making scientific instruments and biological products. Greg Lucier, the CEO of Invitrogen, will assume the position as CEO of the new company.

Carlsbad Gourmet to appear on Food Network
Carlsbad Gourmet, a company that manufactures products using strawberries and other local ingredients, will make its debut this month on the Food Network.
“Road Tasted with the Neely's,” hosted by Gina and Pat Neely, will begin its first season by featuring Carlsbad Gourmet in its opening show July 13. More than 2 million viewers are expected to watch.
In the episode, Carlsbad Gourmet Owner Russ Bruhn teaches the Neely's how to make the company's incredible Strawberry Jalape?o Spread and delicious, award-winning Ruby Red Strawberry BBQ Sauce.

Scripps Institute receives $20 million grant
The National Institutes of Health recently announced that Scripps Translational Science Institute has received a highly competitive $20 million Clinical and Translational Science Award, or CTSA.
The science institute is a collaborative program between the Scripps Research Institute and Scripps Health, partnering with a number of institutions in San Diego. It is one of 14 research centers to receive a CTSA grant this year.
The institute is one of only four California programs to receive CTSA funding and the first in Southern California. The grant supports community-based research and education to prevent obesity and diabetes.

Pacific Coast National Bank founder promoted
Michael S. Hahn, the founder, president and COO of Pacific Coast National Bank, has been promoted to president and CEO of Pacific Coast National Bancorp and Pacific Coast National Bank.
Hahn is taking over the helm of CEO from Colin M. Forkner, who is retiring. Forkner will continue to support the bank as vice chairman and director.

Academy names Carlsbad youth to top cadet post
Cody Zoschak has been appointed battalion commander at the Army and Navy Academy for the 2008-09 school year.
The 17-year-old holds the rank of cadet lieutenant colonel. His principal duties include training and maintaining good order and discipline at the Carlsbad-based school.
Zoschak has several academic and extra curricular distinctions, including receiving the Department of the Army's Superior Cadet Award and the Association of the United State Army's Award for Military Scholarship.

NCTD names interim executive director
The North County Transit District board of directors has entered into an agreement with former Carlsbad City Manager Ray Patchett to serve as interim executive director of the transit agency.
Karen King, the former executive director, announced her resignation in May and departed the transit district June 20. Patchett will run the day-to-day operation as the district looks for a new full-time director.

TaylorMade raises funds for Tri-City
The 23rd annual TaylorMade Golf 'Fore' Your Heart Pro-Am Invitational raised nearly $150,000 for the Tri-City Hospital Foundation.
The May 5 golf tournament brought community leaders, healthcare providers and golf enthusiasts together to support the advancement of cardiovascular services at Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside. Since its inception, the golf tournament has generated upwards of $1.6 million, which always benefits cardiac patients at Tri-City.
