Mission San Luis Rey announces new director
Mission San Luis Rey, the National Historic Landmark owned and operated by the Franciscan Friars of the Province of Saint Barbara and provider of community programs, retreats and ministries, has formerly announced Father David Gaa, Ordo Fratrum Minorum (OFM) has joined the Mission as its new executive director.
The new director plans to uphold the Mission as an important interfaith sanctuary. “The fundamental sentiment of the Mission is one of being a spiritual oasis,” Father David said. “These are holy grounds not just a Catholic Church. I have a great respect for the historical aspect of Mission San Luis Rey but we must be a spiritual sanctuary for people of all faiths.”
Father David Gaa will be responsible for operations and programs of Mission San Luis Rey and management of the Mission's long-term strategic plan. Prior to joining Mission San Luis Rey, Father David spent seven years in Kazakhstan, part of the former Soviet Union. His ministry in the town of Taldykorgan was preceded by his six-year service at Mission San Xavier del Bac in Tucson where he was responsible for raising funds for restoration and construction of a school.
Father David Gaa will be introduced to the community through the many upcoming events at Mission San Luis Rey; the 27th Annual Heritage Ball, Dia de los Muertos 2010 and Christmas at the Mission 2010.
Xnergy takes green technology to Temecula
Xnergy, a Carlsbad-based engineering, construction, and alternative-energy leader, recently installed and commissioned a 330 kW solar photovoltaic system for Southwest Traders, an independent, regional, and national food-chain distributor located in Temecula.
The rooftop-mounted system uses 1650 Suntech 200w Modules and a Sunlink racking system. The 330kW system produces approximately 517,000 kilowatt hours annually and will save the customer roughly $87,000 per year. Southwest Traders will receive an incentive of approximately $563,995 over five years from the California Solar Initiative for this project. This system will offset over 9,966 tons of carbon throughout the 25 years. This is equivalent to saving 171 acres of trees during this time.
“We are very proud to be working towards a sustainable future with an organization as forward thinking as Southwest Traders. This project allows SWT to become more energy efficient while also reducing their carbon footprint,” said Jason Davis, President of Xnergy.

Everyday Energy completes first-ever MASH project
Everyday Energy, a full service solar energy integrator specializing in photovoltaic solar and energy efficiency projects for non-profit, government, commercial and residential applications, recently completed the first-ever installation of a Multi-family Affordable Solar Housing (MASH) project in San Diego. This installation is the 10,000th solar installation in the San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) service area and the first ever to use virtual net metering. The installation was completed at the Hacienda Townhomes in downtown San Diego and is being administered by the California Center for Sustainable Energy (CCSE). Hacienda Townhomes is owned and managed by San Diego Community Housing Corporation (SDCHC).
Everyday Energy worked closely with SDCHC, CCSE, and SDG&E to bring the benefits and promise of renewable energy to low-income residents.
Everyday Energy CEO Scott Sarem said his company is delighted to have the opportunity to bring this project to life. “When SDCHC came to us for assistance with this project, 27 other projects had received Track 1 MASH funding, but none had been installed,” he said. “We are proud to have obtained the last MASH Track 1 funding available for our customer and become the first MASH project to be installed. Working collaboratively with these organizations, we were able to provide a solution that benefits everyone, most importantly the residents of this community,” Sarem said.
This project not only significantly reduces the energy costs of the residents and property owner, but it will also help the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 595 tons of carbon dioxide over 25 years – the equivalent of planting 23,812 trees or driving a small car more than two million miles. Additionally, the Hacienda Townhomes solar project employed five people for four weeks and justified three permanent jobs.
The Multifamily Affordable Solar Housing (MASH) Program is part of the California Solar Initiative (CSI) and provides solar rebates to offset the installation costs on qualifying multifamily affordable housing buildings.
