U.S. Commerce Association's Best of
Carlsbad Award honors The Lund Team
For the third consecutive year, Lund Team has been selected for the 2010 Best of Carlsbad Award in the Real Estate Agents category by the U.S. Local Business Association (USLBA).
The USLBA “Best of Local Business” Award Program recognizes outstanding local businesses throughout the country. Each year, the USLBA identifies companies that they believe have achieved exceptional marketing success in their local community and business category. These are local companies that enhance the positive image of small business through service to their customers and community.
Nationwide, only 1 in 120 2010 Award recipients qualified as three-time Award Winners. Various sources of information were gathered and analyzed to choose the winners in each category. The 2010 USLBA Award Program focused on quality, not quantity. Winners are determined based on the information gathered both internally by the USLBA and data provided by third parties.
The Lund Team is a family-run real estate company that has been doing business locally since 1982. Their team represents more than 50 years of combined real estate experience. Helmed by Carlton and Sandy Lund, in 2009 The Lund Team closed more than 160 sales.
“I'm pleased that we've been recognized for our work with people and, typically their biggest asset, their home. Our many years in real estate have been a great joy and we thank the wonderful clients who have chosen to have us represent them.”

Solutions for Change receives $1 million pledge for homeless families project
An unprecedented gift for an unprecedented plan was the high point of the recent Solutions for Change Finding Our Way Home Benefit Concert.
At the concert event, Mark King, CEO of Carlsbad-based TaylorMade Golf, announced a $1 million pledge in support of Solution for Change's Finding Our Way Home community initiative. This is the single largest corporate gift ever made to Solutions for Change, and it puts the organization well on the way to reaching the $20 million goal that will enable it to lead 200 families out of homelessness, rebuilding lives and futures for 400 children.
The ambitious campaign is bringing results because of people like Mark King, and because of companies and organizations such as TaylorMade. Solutions For Change is pleased to have the active support of many of the CEOs of the region's largest corporate citizens, and is equally encouraged by the efforts of every individual who helps make the organization's goal a reality. Because of these efforts, 200 families, 400 or more children, will in the next 1,000 days move from homelessness to safety, security, and a meaningful future.

Jazzercise has more than 7,800 instructor franchisees teaching 32,000 fitness classes weekly in all 50 states and 32 countries worldwide.
“Our continued success demonstrates the overall power of our growth strategy which is to create innovative fitness classes, offer an amazing customer experience and inspire people to value the importance of health and fitness,” said Jazzercise Founder and CEO, Judi Sheppard Missett.
Other notable highlights for Jazzercise during the past fiscal year include Shanna Missett

Burke, professional dancer and two-time champion of the popular ABC TV show “Dancing with the Stars,” will continue to serve as a Jazzercise spokesperson in a variety of marketing campaigns.
Jazzercise soared into the top 20 on Entrepreneur Magazine's prestigious Franchise 500 list for 2010, climbing 24 spots from last year, one of the biggest jumps of any company in last year's top 50. Additional Entrepreneur rankings for Jazzercise include a ranking of fifth in Top Home-Based Franchises and sixth in Low Cost Franchises.
City of Carlsbad helps families achieve dream
City of Carlsbad employees helped put a roof over the heads of local families last weekend by helping install shingles on an 11-unit condominium project being built through Habitat for Humanity. The project is part of the city's partnership with Habitat for Humanity to help create more opportunities for affordable housing.
The 11 city volunteers joined other community members to put in a full day's work Saturday, Nov. 6, on the condo project at 2578 Roosevelt St. in the Carlsbad Village. The project is expected to be completed by early summer of 2011.
In the case of the Carlsbad project, called Roosevelt Gardens, the city redevelopment agency had purchased the property with the goal of using it for housing for low-income households, said Debbie Fountain, the city's Housing & Neighborhood Services director.
The city contributed about $1.5 million toward the project, which includes the purchase price of the land, and partial funding of the construction. Habitat raised the rest of the construction funds, Fountain said.
This project marks the first time the city has worked with Habitat for Humanity, although, according to Fountain, Carlsbad has a stock of about 2,100 units of affordable housing that includes a mix of rentals and privately owned homes.
Most of those projects have been completed through partnerships between the city, master developers and affordable housing developers.
GIA announces new appointment to Board of Governors
The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) recently appointed Thomas Yang, senior vice president and president of the International division at Callaway Golf Co., to its Board of Governors. His tenure began at the Nov. 14-15 board meeting.
Yang has a rich background in international development for a number of high-profile companies, including Starbucks, Coca-Cola, Proctor & Gamble and Clorox. He has lived and worked in Europe, Asia and the Middle East, as well as North America, and has served in positions of senior leadership at the local, regional and global levels.
“I am pleased to welcome Thomas Yang to our Board of Governors,” said Donna Baker, president and CEO of GIA. “His successful track record in introducing consumer brands to international markets will be instrumental to GIA as we continue to grow our education programs and laboratory services in India, the Middle East and China.”
Yang has been with Callaway since 2006 and is responsible for developing and executing the company's international strategy and leading the new-product development team. Before that, he was a senior vice president at Starbucks, where he oversaw the company's consumer products business in international markets. He also helped guide the growth and expansion of its retail business from eight to 32 countries.
“I look forward to contributing to the board, especially as the Institute continues its rapid global expansion,” said Yang, who also serves as a board member for the San Diego World Trade Center and the School of Business at the University of San Diego. “The dynamic aspects of the gem and jewelry industry, coupled with the high standards of integrity of the GIA brand, mission and people, made this a tremendous opportunity.”
Yang graduated from the University of Colorado with a bachelor's degree in marketing and earned a master's degree in international management from the American Graduate School of International Management (Thunderbird) in Arizona.

Walkathon will benefit
local kids fighting diseases
The second annual Mitchell Thorp Walkathon to support families whose children who are suffering life-threatening illnesses will be held on Saturday, January 22, 2011 at 10 a.m. at Thorp Field in Carlsbad's Poinsettia Park. Last year, the inaugural walkathon drew over 1,000 participants and raised over $70,000, making it possible for the Mitchell Thorp Foundation (MTF) to assist five challenged families, in the San Diego region.
Funds generated from this event will go to the Foundation; a nonprofit, public benefit 501 (c) (3) organization founded by the Thorp family whose son, Mitchell, battled an undiagnosed illness and lost his fight at the age of 18. The family started the foundation in their son's name to give back to the community, and to support the many other families in need of assistance.
“The specific purpose of the foundation is to help as many children and families in the community as possible,” said Brad Thorp, president, and father of Mitchell. “The sudden onset of a child's life-threatening illness is devastating to a family; 24/7 care and hardship become a way of life, our goal is to create as much normalcy in the family unit as possible.”
