Boys & Girls Club's new Bressi Ranch Clubhouse will host summer camps
The Boys & Girls Club of Carlsbad has announced that the new Clubhouse in Bressi Ranch will open its doors this summer for a series of sports camps.

"We just completed Phase 1 of our beautiful new state-of-the-art facility in Bressi Ranch," said Athletic Director Aaron Brown. "It will be exciting to throw open our doors and welcome youngsters in the community to their new Clubhouse."

The branch is located in the Bressi Ranch Retail Center at 2730 Bressi Ranch Way, near the intersection of Palomar Airport Road and El Camino Real.

This summer, the clubhouse will offer the Brad Holland Basketball Camp, which will feature instruction by former Lakers player, USD head Coach and club CEO Brad Holland.

Four one-week sessions will be held this summer, the first of which will take place June 13-17.

A sports lovers camp is also being offered for those kids who just love to have fun and compete. This camp will focus on a different sport each day leading up to a sports-themed field trip on Friday.

Finally, the Clubhouse will hold volleyball skill clinics for girls 4th grade through middle school, and high school prep camps for freshmen through varsity level players.

Tennis stars coming to Carlsbad in July

Individual tickets are now available for the 2011 Mercury Insurance Open Presented by Tri-City Medical Center, which will be held July 30 through Aug. 7 at the La Costa Resort and Spa. Grandstand and box seat tickets are available for the tournament, which will feature defending US Open champion Kim Clijsters, fresh off her win at the Australian Open.

Reserved grandstand and box seat tickets, which range from $10 to $125, are now available online at mercuryinsuranceopen.com or through ticketmaster.com. Tournament ticket packages are also on sale now and begin at $70.

"This promises to be our best tournament yet, so we encourage tennis fans to purchase their Mercury Insurance Open tickets early," said Raquel Giscafre, the tournament's director. "Tournament ticket package sales are already ahead of last year and we certainly don't want fans to miss the opportunity to see great women's professional tennis."

The main stadium at this year's Mercury Insurance Open will seat 5,000 fans. "With a small, intimate stadium at the La Costa Resort and Spa this year, the atmosphere is going to be fantastic and fans are guaranteed to be close to all the action on court," said Giscafre. "We also have a full line-up of exciting special events scheduled throughout the week."

The Mercury Insurance Open Kid's Day, scheduled for Monday, Aug. 1, is free for children with the purchase of an adult ticket. Groups of 10 or more will receive a 50 percent discount on individual grandstand seating on Tuesday, Aug. 2.

Additionally, Mercury Insurance customers can take advantage of several discounts available only to Mercury customers, such as 2-for-1 ticket offers, special VIP package discounts and half-price parking.

Special ticket discounts are also available for members of the United States Tennis Association and the La Costa Resort and Spa. For additional ticket information or to purchase tickets by phone, call (760) 930-7032.
The event returned to Carlsbad last year after a two-year hiatus. Russia's Svetlana Kuznetsova won the singles title last summer when she defeated Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland in the final. The tournament will be televised on the Tennis Channel and ESPN2.

Museum of Making Music closed for facelift through August

The Museum of Making Music has closed its doors to the public as it undergoes a makeover that, when complete, will give visitors more interactive experiences and offer new exhibits. Work started early this month. A public grand reopening is scheduled for August.

Four of the museum's five galleries will include additions that will explore the history of American music and instrument-making from the late 19th century to present day. Each of those galleries will highlight a specific "breakthrough" instrument in displays and as part of interactive, hands-on stations. The featured instruments are the Gibson Model F-4 Mandolin; a Ludwig Drum Pedal; a Rickenbacker Fry Pan; and a Fender Telecaster.

The fifth gallery will be fully renovated. It will present updated stories of instrument innovation and invite visitors to sample music from around the world. Visitors will also be able to play a large variety of instruments independently, or with their friends and family.

The project will also include the creation of a new space to showcase temporary exhibits, which the Museum self-curates.

"Since opening in 2000, the Museum has exposed visitors to the history of music through educational programs, exhibitions and our live performance series," said Carolyn Grant, executive director at the Museum of Making Music. "This renovation allows us to further expand the popular interactive portion of our Museum's vision, giving visitors a chance to pick up instruments and explore their own musicality during their visit."
The new exhibits will be open to VIP Preview Pass holders Aug. 9 through Aug. 19 during regular business hours and will be open to the general public on Aug. 20.

Some special events and concerts will continue during the closure. For more information, visit www.MuseumofMakingMusic.org.

Groups give computers to MiraCosta students
Spirits were high at MiraCosta College's computer lab last month when 44 students received free computers donated by several local organizations.

The MiraCosta College Foundation has been organizing events to distribute computers to low-income students for several years with the support of community partners.

The May 20 event was a collaboration between San Diego Broadband Initiative, Adaptive Computer Empowerment Services (ACES), the San Diego Futures Foundation and Nice Guys of San Diego. The nonprofit groups teamed up to get the computers from corporations, refurbish them, install software and distribute them. Nice Guys of San Diego purchased printers for each computer.

"I'm really excited about this, it'll be the first computer I own," said Christian Cortes, 18, while waiting in front of a big white delivery truck as volunteers unloaded computers. Cortes, who is majoring in criminal justice, said the computer will help in doing research and keeping on top of his homework assignments via his teacher's online websites.

For Corinne Stricker, 20, a Child Development major, it means she can juggle her full-time job and homework more efficiently.

"This will change their lives," said Janet Thomas, a volunteer with ACES, one of the event sponsors.
Students arrived in two groups for basic computer training led by volunteers and then headed outside to pick up their computers, which included a flat screen monitor and printer along with mouse and keyboard.
"It takes a lot of people to make this happen," said Linda Fogerson, Executive Director of the MiraCosta College Foundation. "It involves a lot of people with big hearts who understand the value of putting technology in students' hands."

Eligibility requirements include low income, access to the Internet and a passing score on a computer assessment test. For additional information about the program, contact Linda Fogerson at 760-795-6775.

West Inn & Suites names new manager
West Inn & Suites, an independently owned boutique 86-room hotel located in Carlsbad, has announced the promotion of Ryan March to front office manager.

March joined West Inn & Suites in July of 2007 as a part-time bell person while working a second job as a host at the hotel's Bistro West restaurant. He quickly turned the seasonal position into a full-time position at the hotel as a guest services associate. In less than eight months, in July of 2008, March was promoted to front desk supervisor.

"We were so impressed with Ryan's guest service skills, that we quickly offered him a full-time position as a guest services associate," said Kristine Bane, assistant general manager of West Inn & Suites. "Ryan has the perfect balance between necessary people skills to be successful in the hospitality industry and the capacity to quickly learn all of the intricate details of managing the front office of a busy hotel."

In his new position as front office manager, March is responsible for reservations and room assignment activities, researching and resolving guests requests, supervising the front desk staff of 10, and training new employees.

"I've found my perfect job," says March. "I get to work in a fun environment at a hotel that treats me like a member of the family and I meet and talk to interesting people every day."

He lives in Oceanside with his wife and 2-year-old son. For more information, visit www.westinnandsuites.com.
