The model was developed in 1998 to encourage environmental awareness among government agencies, architects, engineers, developers, and builders.
ViaSat Donates to Carlsbad Educational Foundation
ViaSat Inc. made a special presentation at the recent family science night at Valley Middle School in Carlsbad. More than 100 people, including nearly 50 Valley Middle School students, attended the annual science event.
In support of ViaSat's commitment to science and education, systems engineer Dave Irvine presented a $15,000 donation to the Carlsbad Educational Foundation (CEF), a non-profit organization devoted to developing and launching educational and enrichment programs for nearly 11,000 students in the Carlsbad Unified School District.
Patty Johnson, director of development for CEF, joined Valley Middle School principal Cesar Morales to accept the donation. Science teachers Bob Peterson of Calavera Hills Middle School and Jen Gastauer of Valley Middle School were also in attendance.
ViaSat's donation will support hands-on science experiments and demonstrations in all three middle schools in the Carlsbad Unified School District during the 2010?11 school year.
“As a technology company, we have a vested interest in supporting science education in the community,” Irvine said. “As an expression of that support, ViaSat is donating $15,000 to fund a program called Middle Schools Science Lab Supercharge. The program will enable science teachers at each of the three middle schools to purchase equipment and supplies they need to supercharge the science lab experience for their students.”
“We are really excited about this partnership with ViaSat in supporting science labs at Carlsbad's middle schools as it reinforces one of our primary goals to enrich education through hands-on science,” said Valin Brown, CEO of the Carlsbad Educational Foundation. “The ability to inject significant new resources into our science labs will ensure our students have access to a wide variety of hands-on experiences which will prove invaluable for their future.”
Numerous research studies have demonstrated that students who are exposed to hands-on and inquiry-based science score higher on a variety of achievement metrics. Beyond scores of science achievement, however, is the enduring impact programs can have on students by providing them with the opportunity to learn how to think like scientists — a skill that can benefit them in many realms of life.
Airport authority approves Palomar Airport plan
The San Diego Regional Airport Authority acting in its capacity as the Airport Land Use Commission (ALUC) adopted the Land Use Compatibility Plan for McClellan Palomar Airport. State law requires that ALUCs must adopt a land use compatibility plan for all military and public-use airports in California. The purpose of the land use compatibility plan is to promote compatibility between airports and the land uses that surround them to ensure the long term viability of California's general aviation infrastructure. Lindberg Field in San Diego is one of the largest revenue generators in the County, while McClellen-Palomar Airport of one of the busiest single runway airports in the Country.
Increased rebate for high-efficiency appliances
Carlsbad residents can take advantage of an increased rebate on the purchase of high-efficiency clothes washers. The Metropolitan Water District (MWD) of Southern California has increased the current $100 rebate to $150 for approved models with a grant from the State Department of Water Resources. The MWD and San Diego Gas & Electric each provide $50 of the current rebate.
The additional financial incentive is designed to encourage customers to purchase a high-efficiency clothes washer instead of a less efficient standard top-loading model. High-efficiency clothes washers use 65 percent less water and 55 percent less energy. According to the San Diego County Water Authority conservation Web site, www.20gallonchallenge.com, a high-efficiency washer can save 20 to 30 gallons of water per load compared to standard top-loaders. In addition, they clean better, use less detergent, are gentler on clothes and significantly reduce drying time, which saves additional energy.
A list of eligible high-efficiency clothes washers is available on the MWD SoCal WaterSmart Web site at http://socalwatersmart.com or by calling (888) 376-3314.
