North County Health Services honored for staff vaccine program
North County Health Services (NCHS) was recently honored as Provider of the Year by the San Diego Immunization Partnership, an extension of the Health and Human Services Agency.
NCHS was awarded this honor because of our institution of a mandatory staff vaccination program for Tdap (Pertussis) vaccine. In 2010, NCHS required that all eligible clinical staff be vaccinated in an effort to reduce the spread of Pertussis from patient to staff and vice versa. North County Health Services was the first community health center to institute such a program. NCHS also requires that staff be vaccinated against influenza.
Tri-City Medical Center program receives national accreditation
Tri-City Medical Center has received national accreditation for its comprehensive cancer program, an elite status bestowed on just 1,400 cancer treatment facilities nationwide.
The American College of Surgeons' Commission on Cancer grants accreditation only to those facilities that have voluntarily committed to provide the best in cancer diagnosis and treatment and are able to comply with established Commission on Cancer standards. The Commission on Cancer (CoC) Accreditation Program encourages hospitals, treatment centers, and other facilities to improve their quality of patient care through various cancer-related programs. These programs focus on prevention, early diagnosis, pretreatment evaluation, staging, optimal treatment, rehabilitation, surveillance for recurrent disease, support services and end-of-life care.
“Tri-City is constantly striving to improve the care we deliver to our community and this is just one example,” said Larry Anderson, CEO, Tri-City Medical Center. “We look forward to opening a Cancer Institute later this year which will further enhance the experience and coordination of care for our Oncology patients.”

Jefferson Teachers play host at Gregorio’sTeachers from Jefferson Elementary School acted as celebrity guest hosts at Gregorio's Restaurant as part of the Carlsbad eatery's plan to raise funds for the Boys & Girls Club.
At the start of 2010, Greg Nelson and his wife, proprieters of of Gregorio's, announced that they would be donating the profits from their restaurant for the entire year of 2010 to the Boys & Girls Club, and now they are renewing that pledge for the entire year of 2011. “People can't always write checks, but we all need to eat,” Greg said. “Everyone does restaurant nights for charity; I took that idea and expanded it.”
The goal is to raise $250,000, but of course, the final amount raised will depend completely on how many meals are eaten at Gregorio's. One creative way the Boys & Girls Club devised to get more customers was to have a weekly “celebrity guest host” night, where the host is responsible for inviting all their friends and family to dine and experience the restaurant first hand.
To make matters even more fun, a prize was thrown in — a complimentary dinner for two is given to the “host” who has the highest cash register receipts for each quarter. Winning the first second half of the year were teachers from Jefferson Elementary. “We had a blast, and the restaurant was packed!” said Ringleader Rae Merritt. “A lot of my students go to the Club when the school day is over, so it just made sense for us to rally and give back.”
