Where to Retire magazine recently selected Carlsbad was one of eight best seaside towns for retirement condo living.
Mary Lu Abbott, editor of the magazine, said each has qualities that are important to today's retirees.

Scripps Health among Fortune’s ‘100 Best Companies to Work For’
Scripps Health has been named to Fortune magazine's 11th annual list of America's “100 Best Companies to Work For,” marking the first time a San Diego health care provider has been included in the prestigious ranking of the nation's leading employers.

Land of Adventure opens to public
LEGOLAND California last month opened Land of Adventure, a brand new area for children and their parents to explore at the theme park.
Land of Adventure takes guests on an expedition into ancient temple ruins in 1920s Egypt to discover four new attractions, including Lost Kingdom Adventure, which is the park's first dark ride. The new area is just one part of a $20 million dollar investment into the park this year by Merlin Entertainments.

Tri-City hits $1 million mark in services donated
Tri-City Medical Center anesthesiologists, nurses, technicians and support staff hit their $1 million mark last month in donated medical services to Fresh Start patients.
More than 40 Tri-City volunteers partnered with Fresh Start Surgical Gifts for a marathon weekend where approximately 100 children with physical deformities received free reconstructive surgery, laser treatments, speech therapy and consultations. Tri-City has adopted a surgery weekend every six months for the past three years.
Leucadia Wastewater District breaks ground on new facilities
The Leucadia Wastewater District broke ground Feb. 22 on its site improvement project.
“We've been operating as a California Special District since 1959,” said Leucadia Wastewater District General Manager Paul Bushee. “Some of the facilities have been in existence since that time and need updating to meet current and long-term needs.”
The project's construction cost totals $8.75 million and includes a new headquarters building, maintenance building and vehicle storage facilities. It is anticipated to be complete in the summer of 2009.

Lola’s market celebrates 65 years in business
ola's Seven-Up Mexican Market and Deli, the oldest business in Carlsbad that is still operating, celebrated exactly 65 years in business March 17.
The family-owned business was established in 1943 as Jaure's Market by Carlsbad residents Reyes and Dolores Jauregui. The market is now operated by sisters Ofie Escobedo, Connie Trejo and Frances Jauregui-Moreno, who inherited it from their parents in 1985.
Located on the corner of Roosevelt Street and Walnut Avenue, Lola's has become the cornerstone in the center of Barrio Carlsbad. It is a gathering place for many locals, who frequent the deli for its amazing traditional Mexican food and the opportunity to meet with friends.

San Diego County Credit Union sets new leaders
San Diego County Credit Union recently appointed a new board of director's chair, vice chair and secretary/treasurer.
Allan Shaw, who has served on the board for nine years, has been appointed chairman. He takes over for Shirley Jackson, who has been appointed vice chair. Chuck White is the new secretary/treasurer.
The credit union is the largest financial institution based in San Diego. It has assets of more than $4 billion and 25 branches in San Diego and Riverside counties.

Water agencies form new national climate alliance
United by the fact that climate change poses a major long-term challenge to delivering high-quality drinking water, the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California and the San Diego County Water Authority have joined some the nation's largest water agencies to form an unprecedented coalition, the Water Utility Climate Alliance.
The alliance will work to improve research into the impacts of climate change on water utilities, develop strategies for adapting to climate change and implement tactics to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. The alliance members supply drinking water for more than 36 million people throughout the United States.

Boys & Girls Club breaks ground for new clubhouse
Officials broke ground Feb. 7 to make way for a new Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad Clubhouse at Bressi Ranch.
The project is slated for completion in one year. The new 18,000 square-foot clubhouse will include a gymnasium, game room, teen center, dance/drama rooms, art studio, computer lab and much more.
It will be located next door to a retail center that is under construction at Bressi Ranch Way and Paradise Drive in Carlsbad. The new Bressi Ranch Clubhouse will take the place of the tiny La Costa Branch, which is a small trainer.

La Costa Glen completes final phase of construction
La Costa Glen Carlsbad recently completed construction on its fourth and final phase after years of planning and construction.

Local builder inducted into BIA’s Hall of Fame
Mark McMillin, president and CEO of The Corky McMillin Companies, has been inducted into the Building Industry Association of San Diego County's Hall of Fame.

La Jolla resident Howard Robin, M.D., has been elected president of the San Diego Blood Bank's board of directors.
Dr. Robin is the medical director of Sharp Memorial Hospital's Laboratory and has served on the blood bank's board since 2003. The blood bank is the largest blood collection agency in San Diego and the primary provider of blood to the majority of hospitals in the county.

Costco hosts fundraiser business show May 16
Costco Wholesale in Carlsbad is hosting a Business Show from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 16 as a fundraiser for Rady Children's Hospital.
Vendors pay $500 to set up a table to advertise their product; all of the proceeds benefit the hospital. Costco supplies a mid-day snack and access to about 2,000 people.
