Today Show features Project Walk patient

A patient at Project Walk Spinal Cord Injury Recovery Center in Carlsbad was featured on "The Today Show" March 25.
The segment was about 14-year-old Patrick Ivison, a Project Walk Ambassador for Children, who surfs despite his spinal cord injury. Patrick was injured at 14 months old and has grown up in a wheelchair.
The producer of the segment visited Project Walk to film Patrick's therapy session. The show also filmed Patrick surfing with his Scripps Ranch High School Surf Team.
Through his work at Project Walk, Patrick is beginning to move his legs and take a few assisted steps. His goal is to walk when he goes to college.
Project Walk is a not-for-profit organization with a mission to rebuild broken lives and restore shattered spirits by challenging its clients to hope for a future beyond a lifetime in a wheelchair.

Legoland turns 10

Legoland California celebrated its 10th birthday last month by unveiling the world's largest Lego birthday cake, launching the 4-D "Bob the Builder and the Roller Coaster" movie and announcing a new attraction opening this summer.
The 10-foot-tall cake is made of 100,000 Lego bricks and took 13 model builders weeks to create. The new Bob the Builder movie is exclusive to Legoland parks worldwide.
Dune Raiders, a nearly 30-foot-tall, six-lane slide in the Land of Adventure, will open by the Fourth of July weekend.
Legoland California opened on March 20, 1999 in Carlsbad. Since then, the park has doubled its ride count and now boasts nearly 60 rides, shows and attractions.

Foundation hosts Walk for Life April 26

To raise awareness of healthy lifestyles and fight heart disease, The Carlsbad-based Cardiovascular Disease Foundation is hosting its Annual 5K Walk For Life & Free Community Health Fair April 26.
The event will take place at the Oceanside Pier and Amphitheater, 200 N. Strand. The walk entry fee for adults is $25; children 12 and under walk for free, as do military, fire and police personnel, and their families.
The health fair will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. It will include health screenings, an abundance of healthy food, live music, prizes, face painting, children's games and entertainment.

Local store hosts annual hair drive

EmbroidMe Encinitas is holding its 2nd Annual Hair Drive for the Locks of Love organization.
In 2007, Owner Sandra Sapol donated her hair to the organization in honor of her friend, Michelle Tehrani, who lost her six-year battle with breast cancer the year before. Locks of Love provides custom hairpieces made entirely from donated human hair to adults and children who suffer from permanent hair loss.
Donated hair must be at least 10 inches in length and must be bundled in a pony-tail or braid. Hair that has been dyed or permed can be used, but bleached hair cannot.
Hair donations are accepted from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday during April and May at EmbroidMe Encinitas, 191 N. El Camino Real, suite 202, Encinitas. For more information, call (760) 943-8022.

Sprinter train marks first year operating

March 9 marked the first full year of operations for the Sprinter light rail train.
In the first 11 months of service, more than 2 million passengers rode the Sprinter. Four times as many passengers now ride the Sprinter than rode the express bus route that the train replaced.
Ridership on all of North County Transit District's modes of transportation continues to grow. This fiscal year's projected ridership of 13.2 million passengers is expected to be the district's highest in the past 10 years.
The Sprinter operates along 22 miles of track between Oceanside and Escondido with passenger service from approximately 4 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. daily. The most active of the 15 Sprinter stations are Escondido Transit with 1,275 daily boardings, Vista Transit with 1,229, Oceanside Transit with 1,065 and Palomar College with 846.

ICE receives noteworthy design contract

Innovative Commercial Environments, or ICE, has been selected to design and furnish the office environment for the Morongo Administrative Complex located on 32,000 acres of tribal land in Banning.
The three-story, 60,000-square-foot complex houses the Tribal Council, government and administrative offices for the Morongo Band of Mission Indians, as well as a 10,000-square-foot, 250-seat council chamber. The boutique furniture dealership was one of eight that bid on the project.
