Art teachers donate painted surfboard

Poinsettia Elementary School Art Teachers Tara Clark and Heather Gertzki recently dedicated a surfboard they hand-painted to the school.
Clark and Gertzki spent the summer painting the designs on the piece based on the school's panther mascot, the poinsettia flower and the school's location. The dedication came just as the school launched its second annual Reflections program, a nationwide PTA-sponsored contest where students submit artistic entries in six categories. Entries reflect this year's Wow! theme, are judged locally and, if selected, move on to regional and national levels.
Poinsettia Elementary, 2445 Mica Road, is Carlsbad Unified School District's newest school. Now in its second year, there are 514 students enrolled in the school.

North County's first ethanol alternative fuel station recently opened at the Bressi Ranch Fuel Mart, 2741 Gateway Road, Carlsbad.
The Shell station's two ethanol pumps dispense a blend called E-85, which contains 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline. This is intended for use in flex-fuel vehicles that can run on ethanol, gasoline or a combination of both.
The pumps were installed at the station under a contract with Pearson Fuels, which opened the first ethanol station in San Diego County five years ago on El Cajon Boulevard.
