Carlsbad foundation awards three grants

With its second funding cycle now complete, the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation has awarded more than $50,000 to three deserving organizations that serve Carlsbad's senior citizens.
The organization's include the North County Food Bank, Interfaith Community Services and San Diego Hospice and The Institute for Palliative Medicine. The North County Food Bank received $12,500 to expand the provision of needed nourishment to qualified low-income senior citizens.
Interfaith Community Services received $12,500 to provide emergency food cards and transportation assistance to Carlsbad senior citizens. San Diego Hospice and The Institute for Palliative Medicine receive $27,500 to design programs and train all professional staff currently serving Carlsbad's palliative and hospice patients.
The foundation strives to raise philanthropic funds for Carlsbad nonprofit organizations. All Carlsbad residents are invited to join the foundation.

Alphatec's new headquarters complete

The construction of Alphatec Spine's new, 149,016-square-foot corporate headquarters in Carlsbad is complete.
Alphatec is a national medical device company that designs, develops, manufactures and markets products for the surgical treatment of spine disorders. The company moved its existing operations to more technologically-equipped and energy-efficient buildings.
Construction of the $2 million renovation project was completed in August. The project involved installation of natural daylighting, energy-efficient lighting, new mechanical systems and finishes to accommodate a variety of high-tech equipment and machinery.

For the sixth year in a row, park enthusiasts from around the world have voted LEGOLAND California in Carlsbad as the "Best Children's Park."

Women's professional tennis returns to La Costa Resort & Spa


The La Costa Resort and Spa recently announced that the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour will return to San Diego with a tournament event at the resort in 2010.
The event will be one of the 10 tournaments comprising the Olympus U.S. Open Series.
La Costa's tennis center has enjoyed a long history of hosting some of the most prestigious tournaments in the world.
Beginning in the '90s, the resort hosted the nationally televised Acura Women's Tennis Classic for 16 years, drawing some of the most revered names in women's tennis.

Chamber member releases exercise video

Georgi Jackson-Gehrke, a personal trainer and owner of Vitality Fitness in Carlsbad, recently released "Power Strength Training with Plyometrics."
