WM supports affordable housing

Waste Management recently joined San Diego Habitat for Humanity at a dedication ceremony to celebrate the completion of the first phase of the Roosevelt Garden, an affordable housing community in Carlsbad.
The 11-unit project is funded by the city of Carlsbad and dozens of Habitat for Humanity sponsors and volunteers. The second phase of the development is scheduled to be complete in 2011.
In addition to providing financial support, 16 Waste Management staff members participated in a Women's Build event last fall where they tied rebar and dug ditches as part of the construction process.

Brian Bilbray visits NCHS health center

As part of the Reach Out and Read Program, Rep. Brian Bilbray visited North County Health Services for a tour of the San Marcos health center and to read to children there.
Through Reach Out and Read, NCHS pediatricians are sending their youngest low-income patients home with free books and advising their parents to read to them everyday. The nonprofit children's literacy program works with medical providers to reach the children at greatest risk.
NCHS is one of 13 programs in Bilbray's congressional district that participate in Reach Out and Read, annually providing books to more than 10,648 children.

What's Here! releases TV show

What's Here!, a corporation serving the travel and tourism market, released its newest product last month, "What's Here! TV."
The in-room television show for hotels showcases the city, its neighborhoods and its attractions. Guests who watch it learn about options for their visit while being directed to hotel staff to make a purchase or get a reservation.
Every hotel that features the show also carries another What's Here! product called HotelRecommends, a Web-based software program used by the hotel concierge. The system allows the concierge to service guests by selling them discount attraction tickets, making them restaurant reservations and more.

Henry's Market doles out free groceries

Henry's Farmers Market opened its 31st location Sept. 2 by giving free groceries to the first 200 people who arrived.
When Henry's officially opened at 8 a.m., hundreds of people were lined up awaiting their pre-selected shopping bag of free groceries. Each bag included cereal, vitamins, pasta, bagels, pizza crust, fresh baked cookies and much more.
The store, located at 2618 El Camino Real in Carlsbad, also offered free deli sandwiches throughout the day to anyone named Henry.

Quail Botanical Gardens changes name

Last month, Quail Botanical Gardens officially changed its name to San Diego Botanic Garden.
The organization's decision to change its name comes after much thought, years of rich botanical development and the recent opening of the new Hamilton Children's Garden, according to a news release.
"We believe the garden has proven its worth as a leading San Diego regional attraction," said Julian Duval, president and CEO of the garden. "We believe the name San Diego Botanic Garden will better reflect our mission, which is to inspire people of all ages to connect with plants and nature."

Point Loma Credit Union showcases art

To help promote the local arts, Point Loma Credit Union in Carlsbad is showcasing a mural painted by The Art Kids of San Diego County.
The Art Kids of San Diego County recently painted the mural at Kids Spark, a free art event in the Carlsbad Village presented by the Carlsbad Village Association. Vilma Fonseca, Josue Merigo and Vanessa Schnurer collaborated and executed the masterpiece in just four hours.
Point Loma Credit Union hopes you will stop by to view the mural. The credit union is located at 6971 El Camino Real, Ste. 102. After December, the painting will move to the San Diego County Airport, where it will be on display through March.

The Towers at Bressi Ranch, the first registered LEED-CS commercial/industrial park project in Carlsbad, has officially received LEED Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
