Cal State San Marcos reduces operation days

On July 21, the California State University system's board of trustees made decisions regarding student fees, financial aid and furloughs that will impact California State University San Marcos.
The state is facing a $26.3 billion budget deficit. As a result, the CSU system is facing an unprecedented $564 million revenue shortfall for fiscal year 2009-10.
Elements of the plan to address the deficit include system-wide furloughs and layoffs, raising student fees, cutting enrollment by 40,000 students over the next two years and cutting an additional $183 million from campus budgets through a variety of cost saving options.
CSUSM's share of the budget reduction is about $14 million. CSUSM has reduced days of campus operation to help address the budget shortfall and system-wide furloughs. The CSU furloughs were effective Aug. 1 and will continue through June 30.
The campus may be open for instruction on reduced days of campus operation. On reduced days, University Police, student housing and limited food service options will be open. All other administrative offices and the Kellogg Library will be closed.

Last lawsuit against Carlsbad desal project dismissed

Poseidon Resources recently announced that the San Diego Superior Court has issued a final ruling upholding the State Lands Commission's approval of the Carlsbad Desalination Project.
The court's denial of the lawsuit means every legal challenge against the project has been rejected and there are no lawsuits to prevent construction from starting later this year.
The Superior Court's May 2009 decision to uphold the California Coastal Commission's approval of the project is also now final. Opponents of seawater desalination, led by the San Diego chapters of the Surfrider Foundation and Coastkeeper, have an extensive and unsuccessful history of filing legal challenges and appealing project permit approvals.
Poseidon has worked in partnership with the city of Carlsbad since 1998 to build the desalination plant, which will have the capacity to produce 50-million-gallons-per-day of high-quality drinking water and annually serve 300,000 residents. For more information, visit www.carlsbad-desal.com.
