It is no surprise to North County business owners that there is a critical lack of qualified employees in the area.
Fortunately, there is a place close by to turn for help as David Broad, former vice president of Genentech's local division, discovered when he was seeking employees.
“We had a crucial need for pharmaceutical manufacturing technicians, but there were none to coax away from local companies and it was prohibitively expensive to train them ourselves,” Broad said in a recent interview. “So we began discussions with MiraCosta and devised a program that was mutually beneficial to the students and faculty, and met our needs as well.”
The partnership included Genentech seeding a faculty position in decreasing amounts over a five year period, as well as donating funds to refurbish an existing building.
“This gave us current workers, as well as created a pipeline for future employees,” Broad said. “The students are awesome.”
The MiraCosta College Foundation also has partnered with local business leaders, government officials and private citizens to ensure opportunities for higher education remain open to all members of the community by funding a variety of scholarships and leading a major capital campaign. Annually, the foundation awards more than $100,000 in scholarships to students who meet specific academic and economic criteria.
Each spring, 10 to 12 Medal of Honor scholarships are given to students who have demonstrated outstanding academic commitment and have overcome significant obstacles in continuing their education. In addition, several nursing and surgical technician scholarships are given each year through endowed funding programs.
A recent award from the federal government for expansion of the nursing program from a Licensed Vocational Nursing to a Registered Nursing program was secured through a partnership with the office of Congressman Darrell Issa.
The newly completed Creative Arts Center Pein Air Studio was supported through a capital campaign with local businesses and private donors. The unique studio allows faculty and students to work in an open air environment to best capture natural, unfiltered light while working on their art projects.
These efforts have been supported by a variety of donors, growing from about 300 in 2004 to more than 1,200 this year. Some donors seek increased returns on their investments through planned giving, while others, like Genentech, are in need of well-trained workers and fund specific programs.
