CVBA launches outdoor art initiative
By Erika Finch-McCaffrey
In order to make the Carlsbad Village even more of a destination for locals and tourists, the Carlsbad Village Business Association (CVBA) wants to add outdoor art to the downtown area. In order to do so, the Association is looking for private and City contributions.
"The CVBA envisions a partnership between the City and private funding sources," said Bill Ostrie, the Association's president. "We want to raise at least $200,000 from private sources and then ask the City to contribute $400,000. The total funding would be used to conduct a juried selection process with appropriate public input, award each artist $10,000 upon completion and pay for materials."
The remaining funds will go toward advertising and permanent plaques honoring the artists and donors. Ostrie said the initial project would involve 30 sculptures and murals that would be visible from the street. After the project is complete, walking tours will be scheduled to create a unique cultural atmosphere.
The City will be asked to donate street space for sculptures and private property owners will be encouraged to make wall space available for murals. The CVBA hopes to raise the funds by December 2005 in order to complete the project by December 2007. Ostrie and his wife, Evo, owners of the Carlsbad Village Art and Antique Mall, pledged the first $10,000.
