Cal State San Marcos Extended Studies is now accepting applications for Leadership North County (LNC), a comprehensive community-involvement program that gives current and aspiring local leaders a greater appreciation for the complexities of policy issues and the skills toward effective coalition building and community planning. The deadline for applications is Friday, July 14, with the first session scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 14, 2006.

Past program graduates include such leaders as Ramona Finnila, a graduate of the first Leadership 2000 Class in 1986. Finnila followed her passion and ran for Carlsbad City Council, won the election, and served from 1992-2004. She served as Chair of the SANDAG Board of Directors from 2000-2002 and was the Carlsbad representative at the San Diego Association of Governments. Other leaders include Jim Desmond, Council Member from the City of San Marcos and current candidate for Mayor of San Marcos; Lori Holt-Pfeiler, Mayor of Escondido; Caroline Reis Thompson, Director of Public Policy in Supervisor Ron Roberts office; Gary Knight, president and CEO, San Diego North Economic Development Council; and Shirley Hughes, Vista City Finance Director.

Selected applicants will attend full-day sessions (8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.) on the second Thursday of each month, September 2006 through May 2007. During these classes participants will learn about pressing and complex North County issues such as transportation, economic and workforce development, military presence, education, the environment, housing and land use, energy, public safety, recreation and tourism, arts and media, and health care and emergency and disaster services.

Sessions will be held in topically appropriate locations throughout North County. In addition to getting to know the expert speakers, participants learn quite a bit from one another. The program draws applicants from diverse backgrounds and perspectives, which ensures lively conversations and debate.

To be considered for the program, candidates must complete the application form, which is available at http://www.csusm-es.org/lnc/. In addition, each prospective participant must supply a resume and an application fee of $150, which will be applied toward the full tuition upon acceptance into the program. The cost for the entire program is $1,250. For more information or to enquire about financial assistance, contact the Office of Extended Studies at (760) 750-4020.
