Not everyone knows about the 40 or more objects in Carlsbad's public art collection, but that may change.
The seven-member Carlsbad Arts Commission works actively to bring the cultural arts to Carlsbad citizens, and is looking to build awareness of these opportunities. This group of volunteers advises the City Council on the implementation of the arts element component of the city's General Plan, which encompasses visual arts, performing arts and arts education.
The committee has a keen interest in ensuring that successful programs continue to be funded, like the highly attended TGIF Jazz in the Parks and opera series, and the acclaimed William D. Cannon Art Gallery. They also energize the arts by bringing new events and projects to the community.
Recent projects that have moved forward include art installations for The Crossings at Carlsbad, Pine Avenue Park, Aviara Community Park, Hidden Canyon Park and at a fire station. A functional gate will be hung at Fire Station No. 6 with a firefighter seal and images of a bird of paradise.
The commission acts as ambassadors to the community in many ways. A renewed interest in revitalizing downtown Carlsbad has spawned the Carlsbad Village Improvement Partnership. Working hand-in-hand with the Carlsbad's Arts Office, the commission is advocating for the cultural arts component of the project.
“Bringing more of the arts to downtown will help make it a destination area,” said Commission member Barbara Iserloth.
