Founded:
Carlsbad Educational Foundation (CEF) is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization founded in 1983 by business and community leaders who recognized the vital need to support education in Carlsbad. The goal is to assist in developing a superior public educational system within the Carlsbad Unified School District (CUSD) by rendering general financial support.

Mission of organization:
The mission of the CEF is to support the education of every child in the CUSD by developing, conducting and financing innovative and quality programs and projects.

Significant milestones
In 1997, three Board members, Julie Baker, Lynn Crockett and Peder Norby, launched the Kids Are Worth A Million campaign. The goal was to raise $1,000,000 to equip Carlsbad's schools with state-of-the-art technology. Having achieved that goal in 2001 the Kids Are Worth A Million campaign continues with a broader focus to support educational programs in science, technology, arts and reading. Since 1997, CEF has provided more than $3,000,000 in grants, in-kind support and facility fees to CUSD. This year marks the 10-year anniversary of the Kids Are Worth A Million campaign.
In 1990 the Foundation partnered with CUSD and a state licensed child care provider to provide before and after child care at all elementary schools. In the summer of 2004, the CEF board voted to incorporate child care as a program of the CEF. The Kids' Care program was thus created and provides 550 children from a myriad of socio-economic levels a safe and exemplary program.
The Collaborative Fund-Raising Committee Project was established in 2002. The committee consists of 31 parent volunteers representing 11 schools and two sub committees, Grad Knight and Coyote Cavern Productions. The goal is to raise site specific funds through alternative sources of funding primarily through grant writing. The committee is fiscally managed by the CEF and part of the Kids Are Worth A Million fundraising program.

Annual Giving
In fiscal year 2005-2006, the organization gave more than $350,000 to all 13 schools in the CUSD. IN 2006-2007, the organization is budgeted to give more than $400,000 and is supporting 14 schools in the CUSD.

Board members and volunteers
There are currently 19 volunteer board members with four serving on the executive board. The CEF has more than 300 volunteers that work to support the fundraising efforts of the organization. On Jan. 8, 2007, the first Volunteer Recognition Breakfast was held to honor the time and expertise donated by our dedicated volunteers.

Best recent moment:
A thank you letter from the teacher of a kindergartener that said, "I read my book every night and then give it a kiss and sleep with it, it's my only book and I love it." The book is a gift from the Reading is Magic program. The program is volunteer based and encourages youth in kindergarten and first grade to read. Volunteers visit a classroom to read a book, discuss the story and give each child in the class a copy to keep.
