City of Carlsbad Fire Department staff recently sharpened their safety skills while participating in a training about head and traumatic injuries. The class was hosted by Eric Lovell, M.D. and Matthew Thomas, M.D. and is the first of several trainings presented by the city in partnership with Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas.
“Keeping up with the latest trends and technology in safety helps the city's Fire Department better serve our community,” said the City of Carlsbad Fire Chief Kevin Crawford. “We are looking forward to our partnership with the renowned Scripps Memorial Hospital to provide these informative trainings.”
Both Dr. Lovell and Dr. Thomas have exten-sive background in blast and head injuries. At Scripps Memorial Hospital, Lovell oversees the medical direction for mass casualty incidents, and during the training he shared with the Fire Department staff how multiple patients

would be handled when brought to Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas. Additionally, Dr. Lovell shared his lessons learned about complex traumatic injuries from explosions (also known as blast injuries) while heading up the “Bravo Company Medical Unit” in Iraq.
Dr. Thomas provided the Fire Department staff with important information on the assessment and treatment of head injuries with special considerations for the elderly, children and patients on anti-coagulant medications.
Other trainings in the lecture series include advanced patient assessment, advances in wound care, sleep deprivation and its influence on decision making, super bugs and antibiotic resistances, and therapeutic induced hypothermia in post-cardiac arrest patients.
