The city of Carlsbad was formed in the late 1800's due to the collaboration of two men, sea captain John A. Frazier and German-born merchant, Gerhard Schutte. The two men embarked on a business venture based on Frazier's discovery of a mineral water source as he was digging a well for his farm. This source, they claimed, had natural curative potency. A chemical analysis also showed the mineral water to be identical to the celebrated waters of "Well Number Nine" from Europe's world-famous spa in Karlsbad, Bohemia, present-day Czechoslovakia. Thus, the water was named Carlsbad Mineral Water and the town, originally named Frazier's Station, was renamed Carlsbad.
Today, there are no claims or campaigns declaring the mineral water that springs forth from underneath the Carlsbad Mineral Spa to be a cure-all for whatever ails you. In fact, owner, Ludvik Grigoras, says there is hardly any advertisement at all for his spa. "The town was founded here and that has a reputation all its own," Grigoras said. "People come to the spa from all over and say they read about the spa in magazine articles, newspapers, even in brochures on airplanes."
Grigoras and his wife, Victoria, president of Carlsbad Mineral Spa, became the business' owners in 1993. The mineral water springs located beneath the spa had been unused for about 60 years due to corrosion and blockage when they assumed ownership and many believed the springs would never be operational again. They were wrong. Grigoras began restoring the pipes and the wells, one at a time, until all the springs were functional.
The Carlsbad Mineral Water can be bottled and purchased at the spa's outdoor bottling station or delivered to a home or business. It also serves as the premier mineral water for hotels from Oceanside to Del Mar including the number two destination spa/resort in the world as voted by Travel and Leisure Magazine, Cal-a-Vie, located in Vista.
The Carlsbad Mineral Water Spa is located on the site of the original well and is declared by the state to be a state historic site and state historic monument. Grigoras says this is what makes the spa so unique. "I love the historical value of this place, it's one of the reasons I wanted to own it." He continues, "My mother was a history teacher and I've always loved history. Now I own a bit of it as well."
The design and d?cor of the spa were personally done by Grigoras and his wife in an attempt to recapture the unique ambience of early Egypt, Rome and the Orient. The spa provides mineral baths, facials, massages, body wraps and other services designed to rejuvenate and relax the client. Carlsbad Mineral Spa is located at 2802 Carlsbad Boulevard.
