The City of Carlsbad is inviting the public to suggest names for its new municipal golf course scheduled to be completed in summer 2007.

"Now is the time to begin building a name for the course," says City communications manager Denise Vedder. "The naming of the course is a critical step, and we want the public to be part of it."

Anyone is eligible to submit up to five names per person for the new entertainment venue. All names submitted will be put into a database, and ranked using the following criteria: Distinctiveness, descriptiveness, creativity, ease of pronunciation as well as taking into consideration how memorable the name is and how well the proposed name will contribute to the marketability of the golf course.

Suggested names can be submitted via an on-line form on the City’s website www.ci.carlsbad.ca.us. Additionally, names can be faxed to (760) 434-7287 or mailed to
Craddock Stropes Harding Community Center, 3096 Harding Street, Carlsbad CA 92008.

Forms and drop-boxes will be available at City Hall, the City Faraday Center, the City Library on Dove Lane, Harding Community Center, the Carlsbad Golf Center, Calaveras and Stagecoach parks. The City will receive suggested names from Wednesday, June 7 until Friday, July 14 at 5 p.m.

"The plan is to get residents involved and generate a variety of different names," explains Vedder. "The name is very important from a branding standpoint. This course will have very high visibility, because San Diego County is an important golf destination. The name will be indicative of the spirit of the project. It will put Carlsbad on the map with a premium facility located in our City boundaries."

A nine-member committee comprised of community leaders and staff will review the names and recommend favorites to the Parks and Recreation Commission. A name will then be selected to be forwarded to the City Council for adoption.

The golf course project took more than 17 years to receive state and federal approvals since it lies within the state’s coastal zone and is surrounded by federally protected habitat. The golf course will be located along the north side of Palomar Airport Road at Hidden Valley Road.
