The seven-member Advisory Board for the Carlsbad Tourism Business Improvement District (CTBID) rolled up their collective sleeves and formally convened their first of several meetings on February 8.

Carlsbad City Attorney Ron Ball and Administrative Services Director, Jim Elliott, welcomed the Board and provided guidance as this newly constituted public body began working through the machinations of administering the recently approved assessment that will be used for tourism marketing. (Overnight guests pay a one-dollar per night assessment if they stay at one of the more than 30 hotels, motels or resorts in Carlsbad.)

April Shute, Vice President and General Manager of La Costa Resort and Spa, was elected Chairwoman of the CTBID Advisory Board, with Tim Stripe, co-president of Grand Pacific Resorts, joining the executive committee as the Board's Vice Chairman. Also attending as CTBID Advisory Board members were Robert Cima, Vice President and Regional Manager of Four Seasons Resort Aviara; Bill Canepa, owner, Hilton Garden Inn Carlsbad Beach; Francis Kauhaahaa, General Manager, Holiday Inn Carlsbad-by-the-Sea; Ted Vallas, owner, Olympic Resort and Spa and Barbara Howard-Jones, owner, Beach View Terrace & Best Western Beach View Lodge.

At their inaugural meeting the Board unanimously approved repayment of the consulting loans that had been awarded to the Carlsbad Convention and Visitors Bureau by the City of Carlsbad. Afterwards, the Carlsbad Convention and Visitors Bureau made a short presentation that included aspects of its marketing plan.

Before ending its first meeting, the Board agreed to keep the tempo up by meeting a week later on February 15 at La Costa Resort and Spa in which all seven Board members were in attendance. Agenda items included the approval of funding through June 30 for both the Carlsbad Convention and Visitors Bureau and San Diego North Convention and Visitors Bureau at the current level that each has received from the City of Carlsbad. This important action now allows for continuation of services by both bureaus for the next four months.

Looking ahead, the Board is now busy working with City staff to draft and eventually complete a Request for Proposal for services to possibly be rendered by one or more destination marketing organizations. The Board is set to reconvene at 9:00 a.m., April 13 at La Costa Resort and Spa to review and discuss the RFP process. All meetings are open to the public.

From every indication thus far, the CTBID Advisory Board is now in full swing and has already taken charge of the assessed monies that have been collected by Carlsbad lodging establishments since January 1, 2006.
