Carlsbad Village got 20 new custom bike racks last month as part of an effort to make the Village the preeminent pedestrian-and-bicycle-friendly downtown in North County San Diego. The Village is a popular destination for cyclists of all types, with thousands riding through on a daily basis.
"The racks were installed on sidewalks within the public right-of-way where we've seen bikes locked up to street lights, trees, fountains, and fences. We worked with the business owners when possible to identify the best places to locate the racks," said Bryan Jones, the city's deputy director of transportation.
Creating more parking for cyclists expands the customer base for merchants and improves traffic congestion by encouraging visitors to ride their bikes to the Village instead of driving.
The racks were installed by the city's Transportation Department and were purchased by Urban Place Consulting Group as part of Village Works, the revitalization effort to improve downtown Carlsbad. The City and Urban Place have been working closely on several SANDAG Active Transportation Grants to create a healthy, sustainable, and vibrant economy and community in Carlsbad. One grant would add over 80 additional bike racks to the Village area.
