For almost 10 years, Poseidon Resources Corporation has been working with the city of Carlsbad, the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce and the city's residents to bring North County a reliable source of water, desalinated water.
In October, Carlsbad Chamber members filled a 60-passenger bus and traveled to the Port of San Diego to testify in front of the California State Lands Commission. These members were going to ask the Lands Commission to approve Poseidon's land use permit for its proposed $300 million Carlsbad desalination plant. After the more than 100 supporters in the crowd testified, the Lands Commission decided to hold their vote until another meeting, sighting the need for more information.
We have since learned that meeting will take place Feb. 26 in Los Angeles. Poseidon has the further information needed, and we are hopeful that the Lands Commission will approve the lands use permit. Look for more information on the chamber's Web site, www.carlsbad.org, and in the March edition of the Carlsbad Business Journal.
After the success of the Lands Commission hearing, the chamber decided to put together another road trip to San Diego for the California Coastal Commission meeting on Nov. 15. This time, the chamber was able to fill two buses with members to testify in front of the California Coastal Commission to ask for approval of Poseidon's coastal permit.
Although Coastal Commission staff had recommended denial of the permit, the almost 90 chamber members on the buses were energized to convince the commissioners that the desalination plant needed to be approved. After a full day of testimony from the public, the commissioners approved Poseidon's coastal permit.
What does all of this mean? If the State Lands Commission approves Poseidon's permit Feb. 26, Poseidon will be able to begin the long-awaited construction on the much anticipated desalination plant.
Poseidon estimates that the plant will be complete by 2010, and many North County water districts and cities will have a new and reliable source of water, the Pacific Ocean.
It is because of the countless numbers of letters, hours of testimony and the community's support that Poseidon's project is moving forward. Not enough thanks can go to the Carlsbad residents and business people who took time out of their busy schedules to ride the bus to one, or both, of these important meetings.
The Carlsbad Chamber would like to thank you all for your continued support on this matter. We'd also like to thank Poseidon for coming forward with the vision for this project.
The Carlsbad desalination plant is a true testament to how public-private partnership can and should work. Again, thank you all for your support and dedication.
