The Carlsbad Unified School District celebrated several of its outstanding staff members.
Carleen Proctor, who teaches math at Valley Middle School has been named the 2010 Carlsbad Unified School District Teacher of the Year. Proctor was chosen from among nominees from each of the CUSD schools. The finalists included Rosemary Kolden, learning center teacher at Aviara Oaks Elementary School, and Anne Uber, first/second grade teacher at Pacific Rim Elementary School.
These finalists and the nominees from all CUSD sites will be recognized at the May 12 meeting of the board of trustees. Proctor will vie for San Diego County Teacher of the Year recognition later this spring.
Proctor is admired by the many colleagues who nominated her and by her students, who are developing both aptitude and love for math and learning. One nominator noted Proctor's sense of purpose. “Carleen Proctor is devoted to the teaching of math and to each student. [She is] a teacher who leaves a lasting impression upon her students and faculty fortunate enough to work with her.”
Another nominator talked about her unique approach to learning. “Not only does she hold a high standard for academic achievement, Carleen makes learning fun for her students with creative projects and assignments that get students using math in practical ways.”
Proctor's colleagues also spoke warmly of her dedication to her fellow educators and to the CUSD's overarching goal of creating enthusiastic, confident learners.
Also honored this year is CUSD student services specialist Rosemary Eshelman, who has been named the San Diego County Office of Education School Board Association (SDCSBA) 2010 Staff Member of the Year. She was recognized at the Honoring Our Own gala in April. The event was presented by the SDCSBA and Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) San Diego/Imperial Counties Region 18.
Eshelman was nominated for making an exemplary impact that profoundly affects the lives of today's youth. In her nomination, she was cited for displaying exceptional leadership in developing and managing multiple programs aimed at student health and well-being.
Eshelman was noted also for serving as an active advocate for youth in the Carlsbad community. She has assumed leadership positions in many programs, including current service as chairperson of the Carlsbad Youth Enrichment Services (YES) collaborative of community agencies striving to help young people in the North Coastal area.
In accepting this honor, Eshelman reiterated her delight in working with young people. “I am passionate about youth in our Carlsbad community and happy to work as hard as I can to connect the right people with the right resources,” she said.
Also celebrated at the Honoring Our Own gala was CUSD Superintendent John A. Roach, Ed.D., who was selected from among 60 regional public school district superintendents as Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) San Diego/Imperial Counties Region 18's 2010 Superintendent of the Year.
Dr. Roach was honored for his character, creativity and leadership. He acknowledged the honor by thanking his staff and to the students. “I have been gratified to enjoy the wholehearted support of the Board. Together, the trustees, teachers, staff and I strive to make Carlsbad Unified a world-class public school district,” he said.
The Carlsbad business community will celebrate excellence in educational programs at the Outstanding Educational Program (OEP) gala dinner May 14 at the La Costa Resort & Spa. Exemplary programs in the areas of the arts, science, innovation and entrepreneurship will be honored at the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce Partners in Education event. Parents and business community members are encouraged to help honor some of the unique, creative programs that have helped make the CUSD one of California's finest.
