The City of Carlsbad kicked off its annual summer concert series June 22. The series, which takes place from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday evenings through August, features free jazz music in Carlsbad's parks.

Established in 1986, the concerts are organized by the City of Carlsbad's Cultural Arts Office.

“We keep doing it because people here love it, our audiences have grown year by year,” said Colleen Finnegan, community art coordinator for the city of Carlsbad.

The concerts have expanded since their inception, when about 150 people frequented the music, and attendance numbers this year are expected to top out at about 3,000 per concert.

“We offer a lot of things to make it really easy for people to enjoy themselves there,” Finnegan said.

The city provides shuttle service to and from concert parks to abate parking congestion and give more residents the opportunity to enjoy the music.

Refreshments are available on-site, but attendees can bring their own, as well.

Realizing the importance of the summer series, many chamber members have agreed to participate in the events by donating or sponsoring concerts.

Furnishings4Less, a Carlsbad-based furnishings company, donated prizes to the series' opportunity-drawings. Offered at each concert, the opportunity-drawings are like raffles, in which attendees purchase tickets for the chance to win prizes.

This year's prizes include generous donations from Furnishings4Less such as a patio furniture set, dining room set and a Jacuzzi spa. Additionally, Furnishings4Less is providing the series' grand prize, given out at the final concert, a $10,000 home room makeover.

“It's a lot of fun, people love to buy the tickets because they realize they are getting the concerts for free and its their way of supporting the concerts,” said Peter Gordon, arts manager for the City of Carlsbad.

Chamber members including the Four Seasons Resort Aviara, La Costa Resort and Spa, Las Olas Mexican Restaurant, The Daily News Cafe, Beehive Waxing Salon of Carlsbad, Westfield Plaza Camino Real, Shea Homes and Jeff Kassebaum Photography contributed to the event.

“You can go and expect to see people you know in a lovely comfortable surrounding and have a real good time,” Finnegan said.
