Mayor Claude “Bud” Lewis will preside over his final State of the City luncheon August 27 at the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort. The Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce and the City of Carlsbad join business leaders and civic officials at this annual event for a progress report on current and future City programs and projects.
Mayor Lewis has been a part of this annual luncheon since its inception 19 years ago. Community members are invited to the State of the City event to help honor Lewis in his final months as Carlsbad's mayor.
Lewis began his years of service to Carlsbad as a member of the city council. In 1986, after 12 years as a council member, the Korean War veteran and former high school civics teacher was elected mayor.
His tenure as mayor is hallmarked by his fiscal restraint and his championing of responsible growth.
Mayor Pro Tem Ann Kulchin notes that in hindsight, the mayor's foresight was serendipitous. “Now that most of the growth and development are behind us, it's easy to see the wisdom of this approach to managing growth,” Kulchin said. “In fact, our award-winning Growth Management Plan has become a model for creating a community that balances open space and development, supported by high quality city services and public amenities.”
Past State of the City luncheons have addressed issues such as expansion and development, water issues, core services and community engagement, all issues near to Mayor Lewis' heart. His protective instincts on
behalf of the taxpaying public are evidenced in his prudent financial management.
According to Kulchin, his will be a legacy of fiscal discipline. “Like many of his generation, Mayor Lewis was deeply affected by the Great Depression. Watching hard-working people struggle to provide for their families left an impression that would stay with the mayor years later as he made decisions affecting our taxpayers,” she said. “The City of Carlsbad is often cited for its strong fiscal discipline. We don't build projects until we can pay for them.”
