I am dedicating this month's article to all of you who love dogs.
Dogs play a big part in our lives and are so much fun to have around. Have you ever noticed how new puppies have this subtle way of becoming part of the family? They start off outdoors and before you know it they are sleeping in the house, riding in the car and are featured in family photos, having basically taken over our lives. Dogs give so much love and are often the source of funny antics and much laughter. A dog remains loyal to a considerate master and friend. A dog fits easily into family life and it thrives on praise and affection.
What is it about dogs that people find so appealing? Is it because they like to have their tummies rubbed? Is it because they are always happy to see you? Is it because they have wrinkles, too? Or is it because they have smiles and hearts bigger than most humans? Make no bones about it — we love dogs. They do things, whether intentional or not is debatable, to make us feel loved. And we love them for it in return.
Because of my adoration for dogs, when I came across a press release about photojournalist James “Alex” Alexander and Pups Across America, naturally I had to check it out. Alex has set off on his Motoring Across America 2010 tour. To support his cross-country journey, he launched Pups Across America, a pet photography service where Alex will take professional photos of pets and their owners that he meets along the way, with a specialty in photographs of dogs. Check it out for yourself at www.pupsacrossamerica.com
Hitting the road in a large RV, Alex, his wife Jan, and two pups, along with a bunch of camera gear and other photographic technology, are all heading across the country to see America (and America's dogs) and document the journey.
“Wherever our traveling pup-photography studio parks, that's where I'll be capturing images of man's (and woman's) best friend,” Alex said. “Want a picture of your pup by a pro? I'm your man.”
“Come along with us as we motor across America,” Alex continued. “Throughout our adventure, I'll be blogging, photographing, and videoing the pretty places, colorful critters, and compelling characters of this great country. It's going to be a hoot.”
After a lively telephone conversation with Alex on behalf of Visit Carlsbad, I invited Alex and crew to come to Carlsbad and photograph some of Carlsbad's pampered pooches and their humans. For each $49.95 photography session the owners will receive:
•
Six keepsake photos of their pup
on a CD
• One 8 x10 color print
•
A link to proudly show off their pup to family and friends online
•
Automatic entry of their pup in the Pups Across America contest
The Alexanders support canine rescue; therefore, $10 of every dog's photo shoot will go to San Diego County's own Helen Woodward Animal Center.
The exact date for the photography days will be determined by the Alexander's travel time. The dates will be in late June through early July. The outdoor location will be confirmed as well. Scheduling information will be posted on www.visitcarlsbad.com as the Pups Across America dates are confirmed.
