Carlsbad is experiencing a restaurant boom that is bringing new eateries for just about every taste, budget and dining style.
More than two dozen eateries spread throughout all corners of the city are either newly open or in the works, with choices ranging from margaritas the size of a birdbath to custom-made burgers.
“This influx of new restaurants is great for our community, especially in today's economy,” said Sandra Holder, the city's Community Development Director. “Residents can enjoy new restaurants close to home, and our local economy gets a boost.”
In a recent survey, residents were asked to identify the No. 1 way that Carlsbad could improve the city's economy. Expanding and improving shopping and dining was the most popular response, cited by 32 percent of those who provided an opinion.
“I am beyond thrilled that are now so many food options available for us locals to enjoy,” said Carlsbad resident Candace Soriano. “Carlsbad just gets better and better.”
Among the familiar names diners might recognize is P.F. Chang's China Bistro, which opened in October on Paseo del Norte across from Carlsbad Premium Outlets. Another well-known restaurateur is Diane Powers, whose Casa de Bandini is now open in its new home at The Forum, following a long, successful run at San Diego's historic Old Town State Park.
The roster of newly opened eateries includes Sammy's Woodfired Pizza on Avenida Encinas, which re-opened in June after being rebuilt following a fire in 2008, and the Twenty/20 Grill & Wine Bar at the Sheraton Carlsbad.
The Village is among the areas benefiting from the current infusion of new dining establishments. Redevelopment efforts have focused on establishing the Village as a pedestrian-friendly place with plenty of shopping, dining and entertainment options.
New eateries and cafes have opened, are under construction or are in the planning stages in many different locations around the city. These include a new BJ's Restaurant & Brewhouse on Paseo del Norte and La Costa Grill at El Camino Real and Alga Road.
“Tourism is a bustling industry in Carlsbad. More than 10 new hotels will be built over the next five years, and with those new visitors come new places to eat,” said Ted Owen, president and CEO of the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce. “All of these new and planned developments demonstrate that Carlsbad is still thriving.”
The operative phrase this year for Carlsbad is “bon app?tit.”
