The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada has honored the City of Carlsbad with the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its fiscal year 2010-11 budget. According to the association, the award represents a significant achievement and reflects the commitment of the governing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting.
“Dozens of staff from all city departments work very hard to prepare the city's budget,” says Chuck McBride, the city's finance director. “We hold ourselves to high standards, and it's great to be recognized for a quality product.”
The Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards Program is designed to encourage state and local governments to prepare and issue budget documents of the highest quality. According to the association, top-quality budget documents are essential if citizens and others with an interest in a government's finances are to be fully informed participants in the budget process. Better budget documents contribute to better decision making and enhanced accountability.
According to an association news release announcing the City of Carlsbad's award, “Award recipients have pioneered efforts to improve the quality of budgeting and provide an excellent example for other governments throughout North America.”
In May, the association also awarded a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting to the City of Carlsbad for its fiscal year 2008-09 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report.
The Government Finance Officers Association is a nonprofit professional association serving more than 17,600 government finance professionals throughout North America.
