With the erratic economy, high gas prices and the hassles of travel, many are choosing to stay close to home this summer instead of going to far away places. And there's no better place to enjoy a great "stay-cation" than right here in Carlsbad.
From free events to overnights at the classiest hotels, there is something for everyone in Carlsbad to make this one of your most memorable summers ever. There are 7 miles of beautiful, uncrowded beaches and the ocean and lagoons where you can find every type of water sport or activity imaginable, from jet-skiing and surfing to bobbing along on a float.
The City of Carlsbad sponsors programs, classes and activities for all ages that can be found in the Community Services Guide, in racks at Dove and Cole Libraries and other city facilities You can also find the summer guide and interactive trail maps on the city's website, www.carlsbadca.gov, where you can discover events such as the Snores and S'mores Family Campout at Aviara Community Park on Aug. 13-14.
On July 10, the city is sponsoring the 30th Anniversary Carlsbad Triathlon. Held on mostly flat, closed streets, this is a fun, safe event for beginners as well as seasoned triathletes. The Health and Fitness Expo will be held at Westfield Plaza Camino Real on July 9, then moves to the Tamarack Beach Sea Wall on July 10. The free expo features games, seminars, agility tests and Wii fit demos as well as vendors with health and wellness products and services.
Jazz in the Park, another city-sponsored program series, returns for its 26th year, providing free concerts on nine Friday nights through the summer. Gather family and friends, picnic dinners, low back chairs and blankets and start your weekends off with great music and fun times.
New Village Arts is holding an old-fashioned family picnic in Magee Park on Saturday, July 9, with a barbeque, crafts, summer games and raffles, along with live music in the L. John Simons Gazebo. The gazebo, restored by the Carlsbad Hi-Noon Rotary Club and dedicated to Simons, a long-time Rotarian and friend of Carlsbad, was relocated to the historic park this spring.
The event is the theater's kick-off for its upcoming Season 11, opening Aug. 6 with Eugene O'Neill's comic American classic. "Ah, Wilderness", which takes place on the Fourth of July, 1906. The season culminates next June with a world premiere production, a play being written especially for the New Village Arts Ensemble by New York playwright Suzanne Bachner.
