Louis A. Storrow, a business and employment attorney based in Carlsbad, has been selected to serve in 2008 as chairman of the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce board of directors.
The chamber's nominating committee selected Storrow for the position and it was ratified by the board of directors in September. Storrow, who has been a chamber board member for the last seven years, will begin serving in his new role come January. He will replace Paul Thompson, the current chairman for 2007.
Thompson said Storrow has earned the right to serve as chairman by virtue of the wise counsel and “heavy lifting” he has done on behalf of the chamber for many years.
“The chamber will be in good hands under Lou's leadership,” Thompson said. “He has been a solid player, dependable, thoughtful and deliberative, but always looking to move the chamber's agenda forward toward innovation and impact.”
Storrow said Thompson's time as chairman will be a tough act to follow.
“Paul is an excellent leader who knows how to focus the attention of a group and foster consensus,” Storrow said. “I'm looking forward to serving as chair next year. There is a long tradition of leadership in that position, dating back to when the title was 'president.' I hope to follow in the footsteps of some of those strong leaders.”
Storrow is a past president of the North County Personnel Association. He has served as chair or co-chair of sections of the North County Bar Association, serves on its fee arbitration panel and continues to serve as a delegate to the State Bar Conference of Delegates.
He graduated with honors in 1988 from Suffolk University Law School in Boston. Storrow was associated with the San Diego office of Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton and the Carlsbad firm of Lodge & Heller, before opening his Carlsbad office in 1992.
He advises and represents clients in transactions, litigation, arbitration and mediation. Storrow also regularly presents continuing education programs for attorneys, as well as information and training programs for managers, supervisors and human resources professionals.
From 1998 through 2003, he hosted Lawyers on the Line, a monthly call-in program on KOCT-TV Oceanside, and his articles on employment law have appeared in various local publications. Storrow has been a member of the chamber since the early 1990s.
Storrow said he's enjoyed serving on the chamber's board for the better half of a decade because he likes to be in touch with what is going on in the city and the business community.
“I have met a lot of good people, gained close friends and made valuable contacts that in some cases have led to referrals of new business,” he said. “I want the chamber to continue to be a positive influence in support of a healthy business environment and excellent quality of life, both in Carlsbad and the surrounding community.”
Storrow said the board will focus on a lot of emerging issues in the coming year. He said water is becoming scarcer, so the chamber is a strong supporter of the proposed desalination plant.
The city has an airport that needs to grow and adapt to the needs of the region, and the board has supported that effort, Storrow said. He said the board also has been instrumental in supporting, and planning, the revitalization of Carlsbad's downtown.
Tri-City Medical Center has to have voter support to issue a bond and modernize, or it will be forced to close, which Storrow said would be a disaster for health care in the community. At the same time, he said, the chamber wants to encourage smart growth that doesn't threaten our quality of life.
“I expect the board will focus on all of those issues in some form next year, along with others that have not yet emerged,” Storrow said.
