Green was the theme at the June 26 Green Building Workshop hosted by the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce.

Carlsbad Chamber members, business professionals and city officials from Oceanside, Vista and Carlsbad attended the workshop, which was facilitated by Brent Turner of Turner Real Estate.

“Our hope is that this workshop extends the conversation … about going green and how we can get involved,” said Farrah Douglas, who introduced the morning's speakers.

Turner thanked the chamber for its participation and eagerness to host a green workshop.

“I think this today, this get-together, really just starts the issue,” Turner said.

Speakers included Beth Brummit, a founding member of the San Diego Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council; Drew George of Drew George & Partners; Mary Jane Jagodzinski, a senior project manager at Community HousingWorks; and Stephen Kapp, a technology resources manager at the San Diego Regional Energy Office.

Brummit began the presentation by introducing green building.

“Without paying attention we've been doing a lot of damage (to the planet),” Brummit said.

Items such as solar panels, low-flush toilets, energy conscious appliances and recycled building materials reduce the impact development has on our existing environment.
“Another way to classify green buildings are high performance buildings,” Kapp said.
Although a common perception is that green buildings cost more to develop, the returns in the long run can make the building more economical than non-green buildings.
“Think investment as opposed to expense,” Kapp said.
